"The educational classification of Autism has increased significantly in recent years. Schools are now facing new requirements and expectations to provide appropriate services to meet the needs of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The kindergarten transition is the first major educational transition in a student's educational career. It is a particularly important transition for students with ASD because a successful kindergarten transition leads to better academic outcomes and better generalization of skills developed in the preschool setting. However, students with ASD begin with significant risk of an unsuccessful transition to kindergarten due to qualitative impairments in social communication and behavior. The use of recommended practices in kindergarten transition increases the chance of a successful transition for students with ASD. The current study aimed to identify the current use and perceived importance of best kindergarten transition practices for students with ASD, identify barriers of implementing kindergarten transition practices for students with ASD, identify predictors of use of transition practices for kindergarteners with ASD, and identify differences on the reported use of transition practices between professional groups and educational settings. A reliable Transition Practices Scale was developed ([alpha]=.927) as used as the main measure for the study. It was found that current use of best transition practices is far from optimal despite the high degree of perceived importance. Predictors of the use of transition practices differed somewhat across professional subgroups and settings although regression analyses were limited by low statistical power. No significant differences in the reported use of best transition practices were found across professional subgroups and settings. Although more research is needed, the present study indicated that more professional training is needed for those working with children with ASD who are transitioning to kindergarten to help ensure positive outcomes for these students."--Abstract.

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have social skill deficits that are often manifested in a failure to achieve normal back-and-forth conversation. They rarely initiate social interactions and often show little responsiveness to others. This can extinguish the social initiations of their peers, leading to great difficulty making friends. The purpose of the present study was to teach a child with ASD at an inter-professional autism clinic how to initiate and reciprocate a social conversation. A prompt fading procedure was implemented during training sessions to build a set of social skills into the child's repertoire. The intervention provided social attention and positive touch as consequences for the appropriate social skills. This intervention was implemented sequentially in a multiple-baseline across behaviors design. During intervention phases, the participant generalized the trained social greeting to five student clinicians who were not involved in training.

Although most children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are not diagnosed until after four years of age, they can and should be identified much earlier. Given that preschool teachers repeatedly observe children in social contexts, they are in a unique position to aide in the early identification of ASD, which can prompt the initiation of intervention services that mitigate levels of disability. Few studies exist that examine preschool teachers' knowledge of ASD in the United States and no study to date has researched the relationship between knowledge and accuracy of symptom identification in this population. The current study aimed to examine key demographic variables related to preschool teachers' knowledge of ASD in the U.S., whether preschool teachers' knowledge relates to symptom identification, if ASD mediates the relationship between key variables and accurate symptom identification, and whether ASD knowledge is associated with teachers' likelihood of informing caregivers of identified concerns. Results demonstrated that education level, prior ASD-focused training, previous exposure to students with ASD, and special education teaching experience were significantly correlated with ASD knowledge. Further, ASD knowledge was significantly correlated with symptom identification accuracy and it significantly mediated the relationship between key variables (e.g., education level, prior training) and accurate symptom identification. Lastly, results showed that ASD knowledge was correlated with likelihood to inform caregivers of behaviors for vignettes depicting students with ASD symptomatology. These findings build upon existing literature on ASD knowledge in the preschool teacher population and have important implications for training, school psychology, and clinical practice.
