In Afrika stirbt jedes 4. Kind und in vielen Ländern der Welt werden Mädchen schlechter behandelt als Jungen. In vielen Ländern dürfen nicht alle Kinder zur Schule gehen, denn sie müssen arbeiten. Ihnen wird damit nicht nur die Bildung, sondern auch die Chance auf eine bessere Zukunft genommen. Es wird geschätzt, dass 200 Millionen Kinder weltweit arbeiten müssen. Auch die meisten Fußbälle, mit denen deutsche Kinder kicken, wurden von Kinderhänden zusammengenäht, ebenfalls Klamotten aus unterschiedlichen Marken. Kinder werden als Kindersoldaten missbraucht, werden durch Kriege zu Waisenkindern und leiden besonders unter Flucht und Vertreibung. Auch hier in Deutschland lässt sich die Liste fortführen: sexueller Missbrauch, Vernachlässigung oder Misshandlung durch die Eltern sind dabei die spektakulären Fälle. Laut polizeilicher Kriminalstatistik werden Tausende Kinder in Deutschland Opfer von Gewalt, dutzende Kinder werden sogar getötet. Kinder haben weltweit sehr unterschiedliche Lebensbedingungen.

Gender- and sex-related norms have an impact on us from the first to the last day of our lives. What are the effects of such norms on the education of children and adolescents? Conveyed via parents/family, school, and peers, they seem to be an inseparable part of human relations. After its favorable reception in German-speaking countries from 2014 onwards, this title is now available in English. The texts show that the traditional assumption of a dualistic, bipolar normativity of sex and gender leads to children being taught gender-typical behavior. The contributions in this volume explore the reasons for these practices and open the debate on the divergence between the prevailing norms and the plurality of different life plans. In addition, the book helps to disengage the topic of sex and gender from a hitherto narrowly circumscribed context of sexual orientation. The contributions point the way towards a culture of respect and mutual acceptance and show new methodological as well as theoretical approaches, e.g. by introducing the figure of the continuum, so that, in future research projects, more than just the two sexes and genders of female and male might be considered as a new normality.

For the last two decades, child domestic work carried out in Nigeria as well as in other countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia, has been given increasing attention by international policy makers and scientists. Yet, the research mainly focuses on the living and working conditions of these children, which also forms part of this book. However, in addition, political and pedagogical measures of intervention employed on international, national and local levels on child domestic work are also at the centre of analysis. Against the background of post-colonial theory the author studies the effects of social modernisation in Nigeria as a rapidly growing national economy on child domestic work and historically retraces the origins of this form of child work back to indigenous modes of socialisation and social security within the (pre-colonial) Nigerian extended family network. The research is based on field work in Nigeria, including interviews and documentary analysis.
