Low-frequency waves in space plasmas have been studied for several decades, and our knowledge gain has been incremental with several paradigm-changing leaps forward. In our solar system, such waves occur in the ionospheres and magnetospheres of planets, and around our Moon. They occur in the solar wind, and more recently, they have been confirmed in the Sun’s atmosphere as well. The goal of wave research is to understand their generation, their propagation, and their interaction with the surrounding plasma. Low-frequency Waves in Space Plasmas presents a concise and authoritative up-to-date look on where wave research stands: What have we learned in the last decade? What are unanswered questions? While in the past waves in different astrophysical plasmas have been largely treated in separate books, the unique feature of this monograph is that it covers waves in many plasma regions, including: Waves in geospace, including ionosphere and magnetosphere Waves in planetary magnetospheres Waves at the Moon Waves in the solar wind Waves in the solar atmosphere Because of the breadth of topics covered, this volume should appeal to a broad community of space scientists and students, and it should also be of interest to astronomers/astrophysicists who are studying space plasmas beyond our Solar System.

Dusty, solar, and space plasmas are fields that have a lot in common with dust particles occuring in space, cometary and interstellar regions. This collection represents the latest results presented by leading scientists in these fields. Contributions include all three areas of interest and they cover a wide range of topics such as applications in space and astrophysical plasmas, the general aspects of collective processes, self-gravitational effects, fugacity in dusty plasmas, Aflvn waves, linear and nonlinear studies, as well as fluid and kinetic theory. In the solar physics area, the emphasis was on MHD waves and solar coronal heating and was enhanced by some of the spectacular observations made possible by recent space missions.

As part of its current physics decadal survey, Physics 2010, the NRC was asked by the DOE, NSF, and NASA to carry out an assessment of and outlook for the broad field of plasma science and engineering over the next several years. The study was to focus on progress in plasma research, identify the most compelling new scientific opportunities, evaluate prospects for broader application of plasmas, and offer guidance to realize these opportunities. The study paid particular attention to these last two points. This "demand-side" perspective provided a clear look at what plasma research can do to help achieve national goals of fusion energy, economic competitiveness, and nuclear weapons stockpile stewardship. The report provides an examination of the broad themes that frame plasma research: low-temperature plasma science and engineering; plasma physics at high energy density; plasma science of magnetic fusion; space and astrophysical science; and basic plasma science. Within those themes, the report offers a bold vision for future developments in plasma science.

The conference focused on open problems in 3 branches of plasma physics, the study of large systems of charged particles: the near-Earth space environment (geospace), the Sun and its environment, and laboratory-produced plasmas. There are many common threads in the physics of these systems: energization of charge particles to relativistic energies, linear waves and shock waves, the transformation of magnetic energy to kinetic energy (reconnection), turbulence in magnetic fields and in plasma flows, dusty plasmas, energy transfer mechanisms in astrophysical and space plasmas, etc. The meeting also concentrated on honoring the science career of Professor Konstantinos (Dennis) Papadopoulos, a prolific researcher, space mission and ground campaign leader, teacher, and mentor to many students and postdoctoral scientists over several decades.

Most of the visible matter in the universe exists in the plasma state. Plasmas are of major importance for space physics, solar physics, and astrophysics. On Earth they are essential for magnetic controlled thermonuclear fusion. This textbook collects lecture notes from a one-semester course taught at the K.U. Leuven to advanced undergraduate students in applied mathematics and physics. A particular strength of this book is that it provides a low threshold introduction to plasmas with an emphasis on first principles and fundamental concepts and properties. The discussion of plasma models is to a large extent limited to Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with its merits and limitations clearly explained. MHD provides the students on their first encounter with plasmas, with a powerful plasma model that they can link to familiar classic fluid dynamics. The solar wind is studied as an example of hydrodynamics and MHD at work in solar physics and astrophysics.
