Michael Caine is acclaimed as a great actor. He is an international star and two-time Academy Award Winner (for Hannah and Her Sisters and The Cider House Rules) whose filmmaking career spans over fifty years and many nations. His classic films spring to mind immediately at the mention of his name - Alfie, The Italian Job, The Ipcress File, The Man Who Would be King, Get Carter, Hannah and her Sisters, Harry Brown. However, although Caine has immense standing as a serious actor, following his move to the USA in the 1970s he accepted work in terrible Hollywood films simply for the money or fringe benefits, occasionally as a favour to a friend.Some of these “turkeys” are worthy and earnest efforts. To like Caine's work, therefore, is to have a begrudging, proverbial “soft spot” for the flops and turkeys - redeemed often solely by Caine's presence and, for which he always works hard - they are, if nothing else, money well earned. On close examination, some of these flops reveal considerable charms and interest: not perhaps enough to warrant a career retrospective of his American film work, but enough to reward discerning viewing (given the pre-emptive warning to lower expectations). I never thought turkey could be studied to relate to everyday life. I know some behaviours of turkey, especially the way he drags his wing-tips on the ground and the way he walks. It has made me realize all the sins I had committed, and truly I have regretted them. I find this book very interesting, informative, and life changing. Turkey Character gives me inner peace and wisdom. It has changed my way of life. It has made me a better person. Although we are just humans, and so we tend to commit mistakes, Turkey Character has taught me to think first before doing anything that makes me regret it for the rest of my life. In the late 1920s until 1965 Maplecrest Turkey Farms of Wellman, Iowa, was a leading pioneer in the modern commercial turkey industry. A. C. Gingerich, an Amish-Mennonite farmer and entrepreneur, was able to successfully develop his business from a handful of turkeys to make Wellman both a “Turkey Capital/Center of the World” and have it uniquely proclaimed as “Thanksgiving Town” by the late 1930s. The Maplecrest brand was known for its premium quality and was available, by name, in leading restaurants also by the late 1930s. This historical book looks at how the modern turkey industry was able to initiate itself largely through knowledge of disease prevention through sanitation means.
