Michael Caine. He may be a two-time Oscar winner but at one point in his career his resume boasted more flops, turkeys and movie disasters than any actor would care to have on their CV. Though his early screen career 1966 to 1974 courted American film directors such as Robert Aldrich and Don Siegel, Caine maintained a steadfast Englishness. Until, that is, the soaring taxes in pre-Thatcher Britain turned him, as it had his friends and fellow actors Sean Connery and Roger Moore, into a tax exile.Needing to re-establish his career in Hollywood, the decade from 1976 to 1986 saw Caine accept roles in films so bad the critics derided them. With flop after flop, loss after loss it seemed at this time that the future two-time Oscar winner was bound to be a box-office two-time loser. But Caine persisted, his career rebounded and by the time he returned to the UK was an American and international star.Comprehensively researched, referenced and written by former Australian National Film & Sound Archive SAR Research Fellow Robert Cettl, King of the Turkeys is an affectionate, evaluative and informative historical portrait of Caine's brush with America 1966 to 1987.

Michael Caine is acclaimed as a great actor. He is an international star and two-time Academy Award Winner (for Hannah and Her Sisters and The Cider House Rules) whose filmmaking career spans over fifty years and many nations. His classic films spring to mind immediately at the mention of his name - Alfie, The Italian Job, The Ipcress File, The Man Who Would be King, Get Carter, Hannah and her Sisters, Harry Brown. However, although Caine has immense standing as a serious actor, following his move to the USA in the 1970s he accepted work in terrible Hollywood films simply for the money or fringe benefits, occasionally as a favour to a friend. Some of these “turkeys” are worthy and earnest efforts. Some of them are irredeemable trash cinema. What is astonishing given the reverence accorded Caine is that these indifferent Hollywood flops, which impressed neither critics nor audiences, comprise the bulk of his career between 1972 and 1986: 14 years of Hollywood turkeys and the guy still gets an Academy Award. Two, actually. Indeed, no other internationally acclaimed actor has made as many terrible, indifferent or mediocre movies as Michael Caine. That is not to malign the actor only to point out that some of his career choices were often influenced by factors beyond the merits of the movie itself. To like Caine's work, therefore, is to have a begrudging, proverbial “soft spot” for the flops and turkeys - redeemed often solely by Caine's presence and, for which he always works hard - they are, if nothing else, money well earned. On close examination, some of these flops reveal considerable charms and interest: not perhaps enough to warrant a career retrospective of his American film work, but enough to reward discerning viewing (given the pre-emptive warning to lower expectations). This e-book celebrates Caine's worst American movies, his turkeys, the stinkers that only his die-hard fans ether know about or can tolerate: and as is evident, he's made more of them than most actors would care to remember or include on their CV. But not Caine - with characteristic humour he remembers every one (at least in some part - enough for a small anecdote anyway), its faults, missed opportunities, terrible critical receptions and all. This then is the warts and all e-book of Michael Caine's American period, where he truly became the King of the Turkeys.

I never thought turkey could be studied to relate to everyday life. I know some behaviours of turkey, especially the way he drags his wing-tips on the ground and the way he walks. However, I didnt know that all such behaviours have something to do with everyday life. In fact, how Sir Marthus has studied these behaviours of turkey is so stirring. I never knew turkey is that arrogant! In reality, studying turkey is shunning arrogance. Indeed turkey is a bad leader! I have read Turkey Character and I must admit that I was moved by the words of wisdom Sir Marthus used for this book. It has made me realize all the sins I had committed, and truly I have regretted them. I find this book very interesting, informative, and life changing. Turkey Character gives me inner peace and wisdom. It has changed my way of life. It has made me a better person. Although we are just humans, and so we tend to commit mistakes, Turkey Character has taught me to think first before doing anything that makes me regret it for the rest of my life. Read Turkey Character and your life will never be the same.

In the late 1920s until 1965 Maplecrest Turkey Farms of Wellman, Iowa, was a leading pioneer in the modern commercial turkey industry. A. C. Gingerich, an Amish-Mennonite farmer and entrepreneur, was able to successfully develop his business from a handful of turkeys to make Wellman both a “Turkey Capital/Center of the World” and have it uniquely proclaimed as “Thanksgiving Town” by the late 1930s. The Maplecrest brand was known for its premium quality and was available, by name, in leading restaurants also by the late 1930s. This historical book looks at how the modern turkey industry was able to initiate itself largely through knowledge of disease prevention through sanitation means. Some chapters include topics such as how the turkeys were raised, processed and marketed, especially to Eastern markets, e.g. New York City, Boston, etc., and a chapter on World War II discusses the major role that Maplecrest played in producing not only turkeys, but beef, pork and lamb for the armed forces.
