'Perhaps the best introduction yet to the roots of Thailand's present political impasse. A brilliant book.' Simon Long, The Economist Struggling to emerge from a despotic past, and convulsed by an intractable conflict that will determine its future, Thailand stands at a defining moment in its history. Scores have been killed on the streets of Bangkok. Freedom of speech is routinely denied. Democracy appears increasingly distant. And many Thais fear that the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej is expected to unleash even greater instability. Yet in spite of the impact of the crisis, and the extraordinary importance of the royal succession, they have never been comprehensively analysed – until now. Breaking Thailand's draconian lèse majesté law, Andrew MacGregor Marshall is one of the only journalists covering contemporary Thailand to tell the whole story. Marshall provides a comprehensive explanation that for the first time makes sense of the crisis, revealing the unacknowledged succession conflict that has become entangled with the struggle for democracy in Thailand.

Saudi Arabia: land of oil, terrorism, Islamic fundamentalism, and a crucial American ally. As the only Western journalist to have extensively worked in the Saudi Kingdom, John R. Bradley is uniquely able to expose the turmoil that is shaking the House of Saud to its foundations. From the heart of the secretive Islamic kingdom's urban centers to its most remote mountainous terrain, from the homes of royalty to the slums of its poorest inhabitants, he provides intimate details and reveals underlying regional, religious, and tribal rivalries. Bradley highlights tensions generated by social change, focuses on the educational system, the increasing restlessness of Saudi youth faced with limited opportunities for cultural and political expression, and the predicament of Saudi women seeking opportunities but facing constraints. What are the implications for the Sauds and the West? This book offers a startling look at the present predicament and a troubling view of the future.

The ongoing global financial crisis was not simply the fault of the financial sector. Bankers, households, and governments had all entered a spiral of greed, selfishness, and impatience in pursuit of their respective aims of higher remuneration, greater consumption, and enhanced popularity. The outcome, besides costly bank bailouts, has been rising private and public debt and stagnant economies. Economics, the ruling paradigm in today's society, can explain their motivation of self-interest but not the underlying irrationality of their behavior. Taking a view from Scripture, Philip Davis critiques the overall aims of individuals, as assumed by economics--wealth, consumption, and power--in contrast to Jesus' proclamation of the kingdom of God, the love for God and neighbor, and responsible stewardship of resources. In doing so, he aims to equip Christians to better understand the crisis from a kingdom perspective, to provide the church with a distinctive voice in these troubled times, and to press for radical Christian solutions to address the underlying difficulties. This little book aims to redress the gap in Christians' understanding that led the theologian Jurgen Moltmann to remark trenchantly, "The neglect of economics is a wound in the side of the church."

When we talk about a kingdom, we are referring to a domain, nation, country or clan whose leader is a king. Today, that place is physical; kingdoms can be seen, walked upon, and over taken. The Kingdom of God, however goes beyond our physical senses of what we can see with our eyes and partake with our physical bodies. Michael Scepter, Executive Chairman of Soul-Savers International defines the Kingdom of God as "The sphere of life in which God's Word and Spirit govern, and whose organ on earth is the Church". God's Kingdom embraces all created things in both heaven and earth that willingly submits to His Lordship, governing, and rule; making His Kingdom universal, including both angels and men. It is spiritual as He is Spiritual and eternal as He is eternal. The crisis in the Kingdom is that the people of God, the true heirs of His Kingdom lack knowledge and understanding of what it stands for and how to defend it. Join me as I dive into the true meaning of the Kingdom of God. How it's more than just a place or a feeling, but the Presence of God in the hearts of every Born-Again Believer. Furthermore, there is another kingdom that wars against the Kingdom of God; which is the Kingdom of Darkness/Satan. This kingdom too is also made of spiritual beings referred to as demons and men, but is not universal and one day will end. We'll discuss strategies that we, the heirs of the Kingdom of God may use to defeat the Kingdom of Darkness, and how Jesus Himself teaches us: 1. What the Kingdom of God is 2. How He described and demonstrated the Kingdom of God 3. How the Kingdom was delivered to us 4. Where is the Kingdom now? 5. And how to demonstrate the Kingdom of God to others.

A violent response to Michael Kinsley's 'Creative Capitalism' An effective and practical remedy to the Crisis (in its last chapter), supported with common sense: 1) True Capitalism, but not the Free Markets, had died a few years before the fall of Communism around 1989. 2) No one has yet pointed out the true convincing cause of the current crisis. 3) Most big charitable foundations including Bill & Melinda Gates' Foundation, have fraudulent effects or turn into swindlers without the knowledge of their major or minor actors. 4) Cause of the Crisis: The irrationality in Math, Physics, Economics, Finance and Faith is governed by the same principle and is caused by the excessive expert knowledge' in each field. 5) One out of 100 active US adults is likely to attempt suicide in 2009 20% above the 2008 figures. This is an indicator of the direction of human progress unless... 6) Any explanation that cannot be simplified for conveying to a below 15, such mechanism of Macro-Economics, Science, Politics, Business, is most likely a con. How about explaining the current economic crisis to above 15? 7) Exploitation of man and machine is the only way towards progress. Any under-exploitation is a waste of wealth and pleasure that must accompany progress. 8) If the cost of guarding a tree from fruit thieves, birds, is higher than the value of the fruits it gives, the tree is no longer worthwhile to maintain. Today the Capitalistic world is that kind of a tree and the only straight forward wise solution is: True and Natural capitalism! 9) Is there a concrete and swift way to solve the current crisis to reduce the threat of the unknown outcome?

The Midnight Kingdom written by Jared Yates Sexton and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-01-17 with History categories.

From the author of American Rule and the host of The Muckrake Podcast, an ambitious account of how white supremacist lies, religious mythologies, and poisonous conspiracy theories built the modern world and threaten to plunge us into an authoritarian nightmare. To fully understand these strange and dangerous times, Jared Yates Sexton takes a hard look at our nation’s history: namely, the abuses committed by those in power and the comforting stories that shaped the way the West has viewed itself up to the present. As reactionaries and authoritarians cling to myths about “Western civilization,” The Midnight Kingdom exposes how political power, religious indoctrination, and economic dominance have been repeatedly weaponized to oppress and exploit, sounding an alarm for what lies ahead as the current order frays. Beginning with the Roman Empire and racing through centuries of colonization, war, genocide, and the recurring clashes of progress and regression, Sexton finds our modern world at a crossroads. In an echo of past crises, we have arrived at a time of historic inequality and a fading trust in our institutions. Meanwhile, authoritarianism is gaining momentum and the progress of the twentieth century is being rolled back at dizzying speed. This catastrophic moment holds terrible potential for a return to a totalitarian past or, potentially, a better, realer, more human future. The difference depends on a true reckoning with our history and the larger forces at play or hiding behind this disastrous fantasy of Western superiority. Bracing and compulsively readable, The Midnight Kingdom takes a critical look at the forces that have shaped human civilization for centuries—and invites us to seek a radically different future.
