John Alexander Macdonald was born on January 10, 1815 in Glasgow, Scotland. His parents were Helen Shaw MacDonald, a Gaelic-speaking Highlander, and Hugh Macdonald, a struggling businessman. The family immigrated to Canada in 1820. The Macdonalds first settled their four children in. MacDonald entered municipal politics in 1843 as Kingston alderman and was elected to the assembly of the United Province of Canada in 1844. He represented Kingston for 38 of the next 47 years. John and his wife Isabella Clark (died 1857) had two sons, John Alexander and Hugh John. In 1867, he married Susan Agnes Bernard who gave birth to a daughter, Mary. Throughout the years the Macdonalds lived in several residences in Kingston. He died in "Earnscliffe," his Ottawa home, in 1891. In 1820 Kingston was the largest community in Upper Canada. With a population of 4,000, the town had a military base and an important port on the Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River system. The Macdonalds were attracted here by the presence of Colonel Donald Macpherson, a military veteran who was married to John's aunt. Hosted by the Macphersons, the Macdonalds lived four years in Kingston before moving west to the Bay of Quinte area where Hugh Macdonald opened a store. John was schooled in Adolphustown until age 12 when he returned to Kingston to attend Midland District Grammar School. During this time he lived with the Macphersons, returning each summer to his own family at Glenora where his father had acquired a gristmill. In 1829, John enrolled in a new Kingston school for general and classical education run by John Cruikshank. During Macdonald's 47 years in politics (1844-1891), he was re-elected from Kingston thirteen times. In 1848 he resigned from the government to make way for the reform administration of Robert Baldwin and Louis-Hippolyte LaFontaine and was returned by acclamation in 1851. In 1856, John became leader of the Upper Canada section of the government of the United Province of Canada. On July 1, 1867, the Proclamation of Canada's Confederation was read in Kingston's market square. The first federal parliament sat in Ottawa on November 7, 1867 with the recently knighted Sir John A. Macdonald serving as Prime Minister. During his political career, Macdonald presided over several Ministries: Justice (1867-1873), Interior (1878-1883), Indian Affairs (1878-1887), Railways and Canada (1889-1891). Under his leadership, the new Dominion was extended from sea to sea by incorporation of the territories of the Hudson's Bay Company, British Columbia, and Prince Edward Island, and linked together by the construction of the Intercolonial and Canadian Pacific Railways. Sir John A. Macdonald is remembered as a lively personality, a warm communicator, a consensus builder, a creative thinker, and a forceful leader. At the national level, he fought for unity through an integrated economy and the transcontinental railroad, becoming known as the "Father of Confederation." On the international stage, Macdonald strove to maintain the British connection and defend the frontiers of Canada against United States expansionism. Many things have changed since his time in office, but many of contemporary Canada's defining features, institutions and challenges have their roots in Macdonald's tenure as Prime Minister.

Belleville is a city located at the mouth of the Moira River on the Bay of Quinte in southeastern Ontario. It was the site of a village of the Mississaugas in the eighteenth century. It was settled by United Empire Loyalists beginning in 1784. It was named Belleville in honor of Lady Arabella Gore in 1816, after a visit to the settlement by Sir Francis Gore and his wife. It is known as the "friendly city" because it offers big city amenities along with small town friendliness, and a pleasing mixture of the historic and modern. Belleville became an important railway junction with the completion of the Grand Trunk Railway in 1855. In 1858 the iron bridge over the Moira River at Bridge Street was constructed. Belleville's beautiful High Victorian Gothic city hall was built in 1872 to house the public market and administrative offices. Due to its location near Lake Ontario, its climate is moderated by cooling hot summer days and warming cold days during the fall and winter. Procter & Gamble, Kellogg's, Redpath, and Sears are corporations operating in Belleville. There are many other manufacturing sector companies which operate within the City of Belleville, including Sprague Foods, Sigma Stretch Film Canada, Reid's Dairy, and Parmalat Canada - Black Diamond Cheese Division, to name a few. Belleville has an excellent yacht harbor, which is a picturesque stopping point for Great Lakes sailors and a favorite launch for sports fishing enthusiasts after walleye, pike and bass. Beautiful music chimes can be heard all year long from the City Hall clock tower, overlooking the new civic square and Farmers Market. Walking, biking and rollerblading can be enjoyed on the Bayshore and Riverfront Trails. The Bay of Quinte Yacht Club was formed in October 1876 with full yachting activities commencing the following season. The first Lake Yacht Racing Associate races were a series of regattas held in Toronto, Oswego, Kingston, and Belleville. The Belleville Regatta was sailed on August 12, 1885 in Big Bay. Informal sailing races were held on the Bay of Quinte during the 1930s. In 1978, the Bay of Quinte Yacht Club played an active role in the City of Belleville's Centennial Year Celebrations.

Kingston is located where the St. Lawrence River meets Lake Ontario and the Rideau Canal. It is a historic city midway between Toronto and Montreal. Kingston was the first capital of the Province of Canada. Kingston is nicknamed the "Limestone City" because of the many heritage buildings constructed using local limestone. During the War of 1812, Kingston was the base for the Lake Ontario division of the Great Lakes British naval fleet, which engaged in a vigorous arms race with the American fleet based at Sackets Harbor, New York for control of Lake Ontario. Fortifications and other defensive structures were built. In the 1840s, the Upper Canadian government built Fort Henry and a series of distinctive Martello towers to guard the entrance to the Rideau Canal, the shipyard on Point Frederick, and the harbor. All still exist, and Fort Henry is a popular tourist attraction. The nearby village of Barriefield, overlooking the Cataraqui River was settled in the 1830s, and is now a well-preserved historical neighborhood. The Kingston Penitentiary which opened on June 1, 1835 was Canada's oldest reformatory prison. Its layout - an imposing front gate leading to a cross-shaped cellblock with workshops to the rear - was the model for other federal prisons for more than a century. It is Classical architecture in local stone. Kingston Penitentiary represented a significant departure from the way society had dealt with its criminals. Previously, jails were used primarily as places to hold convicts awaiting execution, banishment, or public humiliation. The penitentiary imposed a severe regime designed to reform the inmate through reflection, hard work, and the fear of punishment. Inmates lived in small cells but worked together from dawn to dusk under a rigidly enforced code of silence. Kingston Penitentiary stands as a symbol of this country's commitment to maintaining law and order.

Molly Brant (Degonwadonti) was born about 1736 into a prominent Mohawk family. About 1759 she became the wife of William Johnson, Superintendent of Indian Affairs for Britian's Northern Colonies, and was a powerful figure there. Well-educated and a powerful speaker, Molly Brant wielded great influence among the Iroquois and was responsible for much of Johnson's success in dealing with them. Following the outbreak of the American Revolution she and her younger brother Joseph played a leading role in persuading the Confederacy to support Britain. In 1777, she fled to Canada and after the war, in recognition of her services, she was granted a pension by the government. She settled in Cataraqui (Kingston) where she died in 1796. She is buried in the Anglican Church Lower Burial Ground. Kingston is a stunning, historic city an equal-distance from Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, where the St. Lawrence River meets Lake Ontario and the Rideau Canal. In October 1783, Captain William Redford Carleton of the King's Royal Regiment of New York, met with the local Mississauga Indians. Crawford, acting for the British government, purchased from the Mississaugas a large tract of land east of the Bay of Quinte. In September 1783, Deputy Surveyor-General John Collins laid out townships for settlers. Loyalists who wanted to continue living under British rule came to Kingston after the American Revolution; many had been forced to leave their homes in the new United States.

In October 1783, at Carleton Island, Captain William Redford Carleton of the King's Royal Regiment of New York, met with the local Mississauga Indians led by the elderly Mynass. Crawford, acting for the British government, purchased from the Mississaugas for some clothing, ammunition and colored cloth, a large tract of land east of the Bay of Quinte. In September 1783, Deputy Surveyor-General John Collins was despatched to Cataraqui by Governor Haldimand to lay out townships for Loyalist settlers. By the end of the year, the front concessions of four townships stretching from Cataraqui to the Bay of Quinte had been surveyed. A fifth township was laid out the following summer. The land was subsequently settled by United Empire Loyalists and Britain's allies who had been forced to leave their homes in the new United States. Earl Street has a wide range of homes, some originally built for factory workers and others for the wealthy. They include a variety of frame, stone, stone and brick, and all-brick homes. They have different rooflines, porches, trim, chimneys, windows and transoms. The Kingston Custom House was built 1856-59 for the government of the united Canadas. The symmetrical composition of the two-storey ashlar building, surmounted by a restrained cornice and parapet, draws on the British classical tradition. The orderly design is achieved through repeated use of semi-circular forms for doors and windows. The Custom House and the nearby Post Office are fine examples of the architectural quality of mid-nineteenth century administrative buildings.

Kingston, a city since 1846 Kingston was successively an Indian encampment, a French fort and trading post, a United Empire Loyalist settlement and a British garrison town. Kingston owed its continuing military and commercial importance to its strategic position at the head of the St. Lawrence River and the foot of the Great Lakes. From 1841-1844, Kingston was the capital of the United Province of Canada. Late in the nineteenth century, Kingston declined as a port and transportation centre; it has become a city of institutions and service industries - recreation, education, military, penal and health care. The largest Loyalist Corps in the Northern Department during the American Revolution, the King's Royal Regiment of New York, was raised on June 19, 1776 under the command of Sir John Johnson. Originally composed of one battalion with ten companies, a second battalion was added in 1780. The regiment known as the "Royal Yorkers" participated in the bitter war fought on the colonial frontier, conducting raids against settlements in New York and employed in garrison duty. When active campaigning ceased in 1783, the regiment assumed various responsibilities, notably the establishment of a base in Kingston in preparation for the settlement of the Loyalists. In 1846 Edward Horsey designed and built Elizabeth Cottage (Page 32) as his architectural office and home for his wife Jane and their seven children. The Gothic Revival style was novel for Kingston House at this time. His design features lacy verge boards and strong finials accenting the parapeted front wall (low wall at edge of roof), quatrefoils, crenellations, a variety of decorative window types, including oriel, pointed-arch, and bay windows enlivened with label moldings and tracery. Below the oriel window is a verandah with openwork buttresses as posts.

Port Hope is located in Southern Ontario about 109 kilometers (68 miles) east of Toronto and about 159 kilometers (99 miles) west of Kingston. It is located at the mouth of the Ganaraska River on the north shore of Lake Ontario, in the west end of Northumberland County. Port Hope's nearest urban neighbor (25 kilometers to the west) is the City of Oshawa. Before Canada became a nation in 1867, Port Hope was already a boomtown. Its main streets were thronged with horse-drawn carriages and farmers' wagons, its plank sidewalks crowded with shoppers and merchandise. Wood-burning locomotives pulled heavily loaded trains through town on their way to a harbor filled with schooners and steamships. Solid brick commercial blocks and houses lined the streets. The town grew rapidly from four families of English descent who arrived by boat in 1793 and settled at the river mouth. The first European settlers came from the new United States. They had chosen to follow the British crown after the American Revolution. So had Elias Smith, a Montreal merchant who, with two partners, Jonathan and Abraham Walton, financed their arrival. In return for settling forty families on the land and building a sawmill and flourmill to serve them, the partners received a grant of land roughly the size of modern urban Port Hope.More families arrived including blacksmiths, carpenters, bricklayers, and merchants. The mills drew farmers from fifty and sixty kilometers away. Grain that could not be milled was bought by distilleries--there were eventually five along the river--that produced a famous Port Hope whisky. Its most rapid growth began when railways revolutionized travel in what is now Ontario.

Oshawa is a city in Southern Ontario on the Lake Ontario shoreline. It is about sixty kilometers east of Downtown Toronto. The name Oshawa comes from the Ojibwa word meaning "the crossing place" or "where we must leave our canoes." More than 5,000 people work and more than 2,400 university students study in the downtown core. Oshawa's roots are tied to the automobile industry with the Canadian division of General Motors located here. It was founded in 1876 as the McLaughlin Carriage Company. The lavish home of the carriage company's founder, Parkwood Estate, is a National Historic Site of Canada. Historians believe that Oshawa began as a transfer point for the fur trade. Beaver and other animals trapped for their pelts by local natives were traded with the Coureurs des bois (voyagers). Furs were loaded onto canoes by the Mississauga Indians at the Oshawa harbor and transported to the trading posts located to the west at the mouth of the Credit River. Around 1760, the French constructed a trading post near the harbor location; this was abandoned after a few years, but its ruins provided shelter for the first residents of what later became Oshawa. In the late eighteenth century a local resident, Roger Conant, started an export business shipping salmon to the United States. His success attracted further migration into the region. A large number of the founding immigrants were United Empire Loyalists, who left the United States to live under British rule. Later Irish and then French Canadian immigration increased as did industrialization. Oshawa and the surrounding Ontario County were the settling grounds of a large number of nineteenth century Cornish immigrants. The surveys ordered by Governor John Graves Simcoe, and subsequent land grants, helped populate the area. When Col. Asa Danforth laid out his York-to-Kingston road, it passed through the Oshawa area. In 1822, a "colonization road" (a north-south road to facilitate settlement) known as Simcoe Street was constructed. It ran from the harbor to the area of Lake Scugog. It intersected the "Kingston Road: at what became Oshawa's "Four Corners." In 1846 there were about 1,000 people in a community surrounded by farms. There were three churches, a post office, tradesmen of various types, a foundry, a grist mill and a fulling mill, a brewery, two distilleries, a machine shop and four cabinet makers. The newly established village became an industrial center, and implement works, tanneries, asheries and wagon factories opened. In 1876, Robert Samuel McLaughlin, Sr. moved his carriage works to Oshawa from Enniskillen to take advantage of its harbor and of the availability of a rail link not too far away. He constructed a two-storey building, which was soon added to. This building was heavily remodeled in 1929, receiving a new facade and being extended to the north. Around 1890, the carriage works relocated from its Simcoe Street address to an unused furniture factory a couple of blocks to the northeast, and this remained its site until the building burnt in 1899. Offered assistance by the town, McLaughlin chose to stay in Oshawa, building a new factory across Mary Street from the old site. Rail service had been provided in 1890 by the Oshawa Railway; this was originally set up as a streetcar line, but by about 1910 a second freight line was built slightly to the east of Simcoe Street which provided streetcar and freight service, connected central Oshawa with the Grand Trunk (now Canadian National) Railway, and with the Canadian Northern (which ran through the very north of Oshawa) and the Canadian Pacific, built in 1912-13.
