Über 75 % der Deutschen leben in den sich ständig wandelnden urbanen Räumen –Tendenz steigend. Dieser dynamische Kontext lohnt einer kirchentheoretischen Untersuchung als Ort von Gemeindeentwicklung. Das vorliegende Werk stellt sich dieser Aufgabe, indem es den urbanen Kontext stadtsoziologisch erschließt sowie Wesen und Aufgabe der Kirche reflektiert. Theologisch folgt die Arbeit den Einsichten der missio Dei (Sendung Gottes) und beschreibt die zentrale kirchliche Aufgabe als »Kommunikation des Evangeliums« i.S.e. Bezeugen der Taten Gottes (martyria). Diese Kommunikation ereignet sich in der Gemeinschaft der Kirche (koinonia) und führt zur Anbetung Gottes (leiturgia) sowie zum Dienst am Nächsten bzw. an der Stadt (diakonia). In alldem bemüht sich eine urban formatierte Kirche um Kontextualität. Dieses Bemühen beinhaltet sowohl die Fähigkeiten den Kontext Stadt »lesen« zu können als auch die Bereitschaft der Gemeinden, sich ihre Struktur vom Kontext vorgeben zu lassen. Ziel ist es, vielfältige Ausdrucksformen urbaner Kirche zu entwickeln.

Kaum eine andere Pfarrkirche des Landes Brandenburg besitzt eine so reiche Ausstattung wie die Marienkirche in Bernau. Dazu gehören das imposante Retabel des Hauptaltars und einige weitere vorreformatorische Stücke. Vor allem aber wuchs sie vom 16. bis zum 18. Jahrhundert. Zu erwähnen sind hier die Taufe und die Kanzel, ein bedeutender Emporenbilderzyklus, verschiedene Gestühle und Beichtkammern sowie zahlreiche Memorialbilder und Fragmente eines Orgelprospektes von Hans Scherer. Diesem kirchen-, kultur- und stadtgeschichtlich interessanten Ensemble widmete sich im November 2015 eine interdisziplinäre Tagung unter Beteiligung von Bau- und Kunsthistorikern, Kirchen- und Liturgiegeschichtlern, Orgelexperten, Campanologen, Epigrafikern und Restauratoren. Der Band dokumentiert deren Ergebnisse und bietet in Form eines Kurzinventars einen vollständigen Überblick des Ausstattungsbestands.

The scope of this volume is how churches experience themselves and their mission in their context. The discussions in this volume provide ample material to substantiate the claim that the church should not be an ecclesia incurvata in se ipsa, (a church curved into itself) but welcoming and directed not only to personal needs but to social needs as well—but not bound to what people often feel the needs are and delving deeper to the real roots of sin and selfishness, be it personal, social or national. Contextualization in itself is part of the mission of the churches, but it is on the edge: should the church adapt to its context and lose both its identity and witness or should it find a way between the Scylla of easy adaptation to the changing contexts of this world that is passing and the Charybdis of a preservation of forms and identities of bygone times that have lost the freshness of the message of liberation of bondage, conversion and freedom, freedom to be what the church is called to be, a sign of hope, peace, reconciliation, justice and love?
