A Guyanese Girl's Story is a series of short stories from my childhood. One of my favorite is "Kite Flying in the Village". Kite flying is a family outing for many in Guyana, South America. Easter is a very special holiday in my village of Vreedenhoop in which the children of many ages make and decorate kites to fly in celebration of Easter. Another part of kite flying is when mischievous children cut down kites by attaching a razor to their own kites. In this story the main character Anya deals with a mean boy named Joey who lives next door. While flying kites, Anya learns a valuable lesson of friendship and family. Children will enjoy the sneaky plots of the mean neighborhood boy as well as the colorful illustrations.

Can a kite change history? Katie and Homan's did. When engineers were faced with the challenge of bridging the vast Niagara Gorge, the solution was a kite-flying contest. After Katie and Homan's kite crosses the gorge and wins the contest, construction begins on the first suspension bridge to connect the United States and Canada. The two friends are there as it becomes an important link on the Underground Railroad, helping slaves escape to freedom. Even as her parents try to shield her from the ugly existence of slavery and the dangers of the Underground Railroad, Katie discovers that the scary truth is closer to home than she could have imagined. Kite to Freedom is an action-packed, fictionalized account of actual events that occurred during the construction of the Niagara Falls International Suspension Bridge, which still connects the United States and Canada at Niagara Falls.

The Amazing Flight of Daisy is an imaginative and lyrical children´s book. It features a girl´s rebellious kite that is hijacked by the wind. Together, they circle the world, describing everything they see from a unique perspective: the skies above. Educational and adventurous, this modern-day fable mixes the realism of world travel with a message about our stressed environment. In addition, the book telegraphs the idea that girls can grow up to do anything well. Fiona, a girl living on a Maine island, is given a kite that she names Daisy. When the Wind steals Daisy away, a fantastic adventure begins as they circle the world, encountering a storm at sea on the QE2, the mysterious Northern Lights, the Paris catacombs, and remote tribes from Tibet to Bali. There is a daring ride with Fiona over Africa in a vintage Tiger Moth biplane, and a surprise ending. This book is available through retailers including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Borders. It had been a great day. Perhaps the Best Day… A seaside village many years ago. A boy makes a new friend who says he has always wanted to come to the seashore. This is his last wish, to see where the world ends and the blue begins—because he is dying. “Then we should do something fun today,” the younger boy announces. Fun! With all the doctors and hospitals, there’s been little time for fun. But what should they do? Flying a kite is great fun on a windy day. But first they must make their kite. And they’ll need supplies. And the money to buy them. And they will have to get around all the grown-ups who might stand in their way. And so this never-to-be-forgotten day begins. This is a story of friendship. Of first loss. And of seizing the day.
