In this innovative approach to the practice of social science, Charles Ragin explores the use of fuzzy sets to bridge the divide between quantitative and qualitative methods. Paradoxically, the fuzzy set is a powerful tool because it replaces an unwieldy, "fuzzy" instrument—the variable, which establishes only the positions of cases relative to each other, with a precise one—degree of membership in a well-defined set. Ragin argues that fuzzy sets allow a far richer dialogue between ideas and evidence in social research than previously possible. They let quantitative researchers abandon "homogenizing assumptions" about cases and causes, they extend diversity-oriented research strategies, and they provide a powerful connection between theory and data analysis. Most important, fuzzy sets can be carefully tailored to fit evolving theoretical concepts, sharpening quantitative tools with in-depth knowledge gained through qualitative, case-oriented inquiry. This book will revolutionize research methods not only in sociology, political science, and anthropology but in any field of inquiry dealing with complex patterns of causation.

Some of the world's top experts, including devoted veterinarians, open a window into the minds of our feline freinds. Cats have become so beloved in recent years that some 75 million live in American homes as family pets. Another quarter million are community cats, increasingly serving us in barns, breweries, warehouses and more to keep rodents and other unwanted wildlife under control. Yet the cat has often seemed mysterious—compared to dogs, our cats can feel bit more aloof and difficult to truly “get.” But new research into our feline friends now reveals their love for us, their secret language, including accents and dialects, and their inner depths. In a series of engaging stories featuring the world’s top experts, veterinarians and pet-owners themselves, this premium book opens a window into the minds of our feline friends. Among the features: How to raise a kitten to become a great cat; how to understand your cat's purrs, meows and body language; how to teach your cat tricks; and how to rescue a stranded cat and make it your own. A bonus feature covers favorite breeds and the advantages each confers.

There are a lot of experts out there who say that cats are strictly independent animals. These very same experts state that cats have chosen to associate with humans due to their strategy of survival. Although many argue with this statement, there are many who agree as well – although those that agree are normally those in the percentile who don’t agree with cats. Anyone who has owned a cat will tell you that cats are great at bonding with people, although they are very particular. Normally, a cat will choose someone in the home that he bonds with. You’ll know when a cat wants to bond with you, as he will hop on your lap seeking attention or snuggle up to you at night when you are sleeping. Purring is a strong sign of affections, especially with cats that are looking to bond. Even though there are a lot of theories and speculation out there, no one really knows why cats bond with humans. There’s little to no proof available as well, other than cats and their natural instinct for physical survival. Those who own cats know that cats crave attention, simply to make them feel needed. They love to be pampered by their owners, and will shower you with attention and affection if you just give them the chance. Those who are new to owning cats may find bonding to be very different. Cats are different from other animals, including dogs, in the sense that they bond different. Different breeds of cats will bond different with their owners, although most prefer affection and attention. The more time you spend around your cat, the more he will bond with you. Over the years, you’ll find that the bond you create with your pet has grown very strong The Meow Kitty Cat Care Log Book & Journal is the ideal gift for cat lovers. The Developing Individual In A Changing World Volume Ii written by Klaus F. Riegel and has been published by Transaction Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-09-30 with Psychology categories.

This two-volume work levels both criticism and challenge to traditional developmental psychology. For too long, developmental psychologists have been studying individuals as if they developed in a sociocultural vacuum. As psychologists began to study the individual's development more broadly, they considered the impact of a number of other factors in the physical and social environment: early education, sociocultural differences, mass communication, alternative living arrangements, and medical care--to name but a few. Volume I, Historical and Cultural Issues, examines the problems of behavioral development from historical, political, theoretical, and cultural points of view. A number of content areas already familiar to developmental psychologists are discussed: Piaget's theory, perceptual development, socialization, and language acquisition. In addition, topics relatively unfamiliar to American psychologists are included: the contribution of early European developmentalists such as William and Clara Stern, Alfred Binet, and Eduard Spranger; and an introduction to recent Soviet developmental theory. Volume II, Social and Environmental Issues, considers the effects of changes in social and environmental conditions upon individual development. The expanding impact of technology such as the communications media, the importance of nutrition, and the design of playgrounds and other spaces for growing children are among the changes examined, as are the impact of social organizations and interactions within small groups, focusing upon preschool education, interaction within the family, and personality development throughout the individual's life. Klaus F. Riegel (1925-1977) was a professor of psychology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His books include Psychology, mon amour: A countertext, Foundations of Dialectical Psychology, and Psychological Studies in Bilingual Performances and Cross-linguistic Differences. John A. Meacham is distinguished professor of psychology at the University of Buffalo. His current research interests include the influence of student diversity on teaching and learning and the science of teaching for and assessment of undergraduate teaching and learning. He has served as a consultant for the Association of American Colleges and Universities' Asheville Institute on General Education and initiated the concept of prospective memory.
