Franz Schreker (1878–1934) gehört zu den bedeutenden Opernkomponisten der Wiener Moderne. Seine Werke lösten seit der spektakulären Uraufführung des "Fernen Klangs" 1912 sowohl Begeisterungsstürme als auch heftige Ablehnung aus. Vor allem das Phänomen des spezifischen "Klangs" seiner Werke wurde in den Rezensionen der Zeitgenossen besonders hervorgehoben. Der Kritiker Paul Bekker befand ihn sogar ähnlich musikdramatisch begabt wie Richard Wagner. Dieser Band widmet sich der Struktur des Klangs der vier in Wien komponierten Opern Schrekers und analysiert diesen nach instrumentatorischen, harmonischen, motivischen und dramaturgischen Gesichtspunkten. Der Untersuchung liegen die Opern "Der ferne Klang" (UA 1912), "Das Spielwerk und die Prinzessin" (UA 1913), "Die Gezeichneten" (UA 1918) und "Der Schatzgräber" (UA 1920) zugrunde.

Dass man eine musikalische Form "uberschaubar" - und nicht etwa "uberhorbar" - nennt, mutet ebenso selbstverstandlich an wie der immer wieder formulierte Vergleich zwischen Musik und Architektur. Doch verbirgt sich hinter diesem Transfer optischer Kategorien auf akustisch wahrnehmbare Klangereignisse eine Traditionslinie, die bereits im 18. Jahrhundert Widerspruch hervorrief. So kritisierte Johann Gottfried Herder den von der Architektur entlehnten Formbegriff klassizistischer Autoren als Kolonialisierung des Ohrs durch das Auge - ein Gedanke, den Richard Wagner aufgreifen und gegen Eduard Hanslicks Asthetik des "Musikalisch-Schonen" verteidigen sollte. In diesem Sinne wird Wagners "unendliche Melodie" neu als Versuch interpretiert, eine "unanschauliche", von der Vorherrschaft des Auges weitgehend befreite Musik zu schaffen. Klang und Form treten dabei in ein Verhaltnis, das sich mit Begriffspaaren wie "dionysisch/apollinisch" (Nietzsche) oder "Es/Ich" (Freud) verbindet und auf dieser Grundlage sogar musikdramatische Gestalt gewinnt: in Wagners Meistersingern von Nurnberg und noch am Ende der 1910er Jahre in Franz Schrekers Die Gezeichneten.
