An Electrifying, Historical Novel Across Continents. In 1941, the Nazis' brutal attack on Russia causes the flight of young Klara Grossman, who then meets and marries Warsaw-born Volya Warschawski. The young couple, alone and terrified, go on a perilous journey through the exotic Asian lands Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. That is, until an unexpected and shocking separation causes their lives to unravel into a desperate fight for survival. As Klara travels back through war-torn Europe with her infant child to search for her husband, she is haunted by the question of whether her biological mother is still alive, and the circumstances of her birth. Joining Klara and Volya in this interlocking story of desire, passion and memory is Henryk Szysmo, a young Red Army soldier who for the first time, violates his instinctive behavior of not getting involved in anything, even love. Readers of Klara's War will witness how the inner war of these unforgettable characters reaches a thrilling climax during the turbulent, post-war era of Israel's War of Independence in May, 1948.

This book presents a sociocultural linguistic analysis of discourses of conflict, as well as an examination of how linguistic identity is embodied, negotiated and realized during a time of war. It provides new insights regarding multilingualism among Ukrainians in Ukraine and in the diaspora of New Zealand, the US and Canada, and sheds light on the impact of the Russian-Ukrainian war on language attitudes among Ukrainians around the world. Crucially, it features an analysis of a new movement in Ukraine that developed during the course of the war – ‘changing your mother tongue’, which embodies what it is to renegotiate linguistic identity. It will be of value to researchers, faculty, and students in the areas of linguistics, Slavic studies, history, politics, anthropology, sociology and international affairs, as well as those interested in Ukrainian affairs more generally.

1822 erkrankt E.T.A. Hoffmann schwer und diktiert - völlig gelähmt - vom Sterbebett aus die Erzählung »Des Vetters Eckfenster«, in der der große Romantiker sich dem kritischen Realismus annähert bevor er am 25. Juni in Berlin stirbt.

A brief historical and political synopsis of theevents around Klara's travels is provided at the beginning of each chapter. Editorial Reviews "What a fascinating character Ben G. Frank has created in Klara. The author, askilled travel writer, weaves into his story what many Jews suffered and overcame."- Ruth Gruber, author, Raquela: A Woman of Israel Klara's Journey is an epic tale of courage and conviction, love and betrayal. An affecting, involving adventure."- Judith Kelman, author, Summer of Storms "In vivid, compelling style, Ben Frank takes us on the remarkable odyssey of an intrepid Jewish girl through the chaotic social and political kaleidoscope of Russia on the eve of World War I. One is swept up in the powerful narrative flow and poignant story of displacement, first love and the challenge of forging a new life in a daunting new land." - Raphael Rothstein, 15Minutesmagazine.com "Klara's Journey, with its passion, images, location, time frame and narrative drive seems like a reprise of Doctor Zhivago. It is the heart wrenching story of a Jewish teenager's search for her father in the vast Siberian tundra during the chaotic days of the Russian Civil War. A human struggle of epic proportions, Klara's Journey, will linger in the mind long after the story unfolds." -Warren Adler, author, The War of the Roses "Frank, a well-known travel-writer brings to life not only the compelling storyline of his first novel but the frigid and barren wasteland that Klara had to traverse as she flees Odessa, through the icy Siberian cities of Cheliabinsk, Irkutsk, Chita, Harbin, and Vladivostok. An indomitable soul, Klara ultimately finds her destiny in a surprise rapproachment with her libertine father who had abandoned her and her family many years ago, in Vancouver Canada." -Lewis Burke Frumkes, director of the Hunter College Writing Center, New York City; author, Favorite Words of Famous People "Ben Frank has made skillful use of his longtime expertise in researching the cultural and religious history of the far-flung diaspora of the Jewish people throughout the world and creating this credible and compelling novel about a passionate young woman. Caught in the maelstrom of the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the ensuing years of civil war, Klara's Odyssey from Odessa eastward through Siberia in hope of reuniting with her father in Canada is more than a suspenseful personal story. It is a microcosm of the determination and courage of hundreds of thousands of Jews and non-Jews determined to escape the oppressive rule of the Russian tsars and find freedom in America and other welcoming countries." - Gene Sosin, Ph.D., former senior executive of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty

The twenty-seven original contributions to this volume investigate the ways in which the First World War has been commemorated and represented internationally in prose fiction, drama, film, docudrama and comics from the 1960s until the present. The volume thus provides a comprehensive survey of the cultural memory of the war as reflected in various media across national cultures, addressing the complex connections between the cultural post-memory of the war and its mediation. In four sections, the essays investigate (1) the cultural legacy of the Great War (including its mythology and iconography); (2) the implications of different forms and media for representing the war; (3) ‘national’ memories, foregrounding the differences in post-memory representations and interpretations of the Great War, and (4) representations of the Great War within larger temporal or spatial frameworks, focusing specifically on the ideological dimensions of its ‘remembrance’ in historical, socio-political, gender-oriented, and post-colonial contexts.
