This is the only contemporary text to cover both epistemology and philosophy of mind at an introductory level. It also serves as a general introduction to philosophy: it discusses the nature and methods of philosophy as well as basic logical tools of the trade. The book is divided into three parts. The first focuses on knowledge, in particular, skepticism and knowledge of the external world, and knowledge of language. The second focuses on mind, including the metaphysics of mind and freedom of will. The third brings together knowledge and mind, discussing knowledge of mind (other minds and our own) and naturalism and how epistemology and philosophy of mind come together in contemporary cognitive science. Throughout, the authors take into account the needs of the beginning philosophy student. They have made very effort to ensure accessibility while preserving accuracy.

Michael Polanyi is one of the most inspiring and original thinkers in the 20th century. He launched a new and independent philosophical tradition and fertilized many intellectual areas from cognitive psychology to management sciences. Polanyi’s systematic thoughts span over many areas of philosophy, yet his most fruitful ideas, the fundamentals of his system are contributions to epistemology and ontology. His theory of tacit knowledge, his critique of both the objectivist and the subjectivist views of knowledge, his concept of emergence, and his theory of spontaneous order and coordination—just to mention a few—are probably the most important and most well-known. Polanyi also gave us a new picture about science in which scientist’s personal participation guided by his cognitive and moral commitment, passions and trust, is an essential part of knowledge itself, in both its discovery and its validation. This volume focuses on these epistemological and ontological issues. Thirteen critical essays analyze, interpret and develop further Polanyi’s ideas in the two parts of the book: Knowing and Being. Most of these papers address Polanyian themes in a comparative way, in dialogue with other major traditions illuminating both sides and helping to re-evaluate Polanyi in broader philosophical context. The title of this book also refers to a seminal collection of papers of Michael Polanyi (edited by Marjori Grene in 1969), Knowing and Being.

Self Knowledge written by Stephen Hetherington and has been published by Broadview Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-03-19 with Philosophy categories.

Self-Knowledge introduces philosophical ideas about knowledge and the self. The book takes the form of a personal meditation: it is one person’s attempt to reflect philosophically upon vital aspects of his existence. It shows how profound philosophy can swiftly emerge from intense private reflection upon the details of one’s life and, thus, will help the reader take the first steps toward philosophical self-understanding. Along the way, readers will encounter moments of puzzlement, then clarity, followed by more perplexity and further insights, and then—finally—some philosophical peace of mind.

A short account of the philosophy of knowledge for students reading philosophy for the first time. It also serves as a general introduction to those interested in the subject. Jennifer Trusted examines the nature of philosophy as a subject for study and suggests that it has practical use as well as intellectual appeal since it is concerned with developing our understanding through critical appraisal of the concepts we use, so making our problems clear. Dr Trusted also looks at the approach of some of the leading philosophers of the western world to the philosophy of knowledge. The views of Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Locke, Berkeley, Hume and Kant are considered. There are two chapters principally concerned with the views of the twentieth-century philosophers: A.J. Ayer and Norman Malcolm. The concluding chapter summarises the various approaches and the way they contribute to clarifying our ideas.

In Knowing the Score, philosopher David Papineau uses sports to illuminate some of modern philosophy's most perplexing questions. As Papineau demonstrates, the study of sports clarifies, challenges, and sometimes confuses crucial issues in philosophy. The tactics of road bicycle racing shed new light on questions of altruism, while sporting family dynasties reorient the nature v. nurture debate. Why do sports competitors choke? Why do fans think God will favor their team over their rivals? How can it be moral to deceive the umpire by framing a pitch? From all of these questions, and many more, philosophy has a great deal to learn. An entertaining and erudite book that ranges far and wide through the sporting world, Knowing the Score is perfect reading for armchair philosophers and Monday morning quarterbacks alike.

Human Knowing written by James W. Felt and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Philosophy categories.

Human Knowing is a clearly-written, brief introduction to philosophic thinking that guides the reader through an exploration of sense perception, ordinary knowing, scientific knowing, and philosophic knowing. This philosophic journey culminates in a justification of philosophy itself as a genuine form of knowing and thus is a natural prelude to metaphysics. Though Felt has largely managed to avoid unfamiliar language, the development is a genuine exercise in philosophic thinking. The outcome amounts to a contemporary expression of a position that is basically like that of Thomas Aquinas though enriched by insights from Bergson, Whitehead, and phenomenology. The book is accessible, smart, and refreshing. Any interested general reader or student will profit from reading it.
