Comparing Avicenna’s and Thomas Aquinas’ positions regarding human knowledge, this volumes talks about God and the nature of the creative action and the beginning of the universe. The overall argument of the book is that their conception of theological language plays an important role in shaping their positions concerning the creation of the universe. In the first part, their conception of the theological language and divine formal features are explored and how their positions regarding theological language differ from each other is discussed. The second part includes a comparison of their conceptions of the nature of the divine creative action—which provides a good example showing how their conceptions of theological language affect the way they talk about creation—and their arguments concerning the beginning of the universe.

This book situates Nee's view within the rich heritage of the Protestant, Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox spiritual traditions, and thus renders Nee's thought more intelligible to Christians of both evangelical and more liberal persuasions. In this book Dongsheng John Wu examines Watchman Nee's thought on the spiritual life, focusing on the relationship between spiritual formation and spiritual knowledge. Different ways of acquiring spiritual understanding are explored, including the respective roles of divine illumination, intellectual studies, and life circumstances. Understanding Watchman Nee begins by synthesizing strategic aspects of Nee's teachings as well as formative events and sources in the development of Nee's own spirituality and theology. It then utilizes the critical work of contemporary theologian Mark McIntosh to bring Nee's voice into dialogue with some important figures in the history of Christian spirituality. Such interactions reveal that Nee's crucial theological convictions exhibit strong parallels with related themes found in the church's spiritual or mystical treasures.

For Augustine the world is replete with meaning; it represents not merely a collection of facts to be catalogued but a repository of truths to be discovered and discerned, a view which contrasts with the one we have inherited as a result of the thought of figures such as Descartes, Newton, and Kant. What difference would it make to see the world as created? Matthew W. Knotts explores this question in close conversation with Augustine, according to whom our nature as God's creatures determines fundamental aspects of our identity and our knowledge. In a postmodern context informed by a renewed appreciation of the limitations of human nature and reason, Augustine once again emerges as an insightful and compelling source for further reflection.

One of the more frustrating experiences we can have is the feeling of being misunderstood. All relationships require levels of understanding for them to be ful lling and satisfying. All relationships require communication. We all communicate. However, we are not all understood – at least not as often as we would like. Fast moving life-styles, constant exposure to media, changes occurring at break-neck speeds all seem to leave the ability to watch, look, and listen to each other more challenging than ever before. We are overly distracted, self-oriented, cynical, and desensitized. We have learned to tune each other out. Having a great deal of knowledge does not always translate into the ability to truly understand. If we would spend the time and slow down the process, we would have a better chance of developing understanding and wisdom. We are ensnared in our ability to understand by a web of the modern fast moving lifestyle. As a result, our unconscious response to relationship building is, “Who has time for that?” As a seasoned minister and counselor, who is rooted in a deep spiritual foundation, Dr. Shaw o ers this book as a beacon of hope for behavioral change. I invite you to delve deeper into this timely, provocative treatise to nd out why we all aim to be, and need to be, understood. —Bishop Adria n Starks, World Victory International Christian Center, Greensboro, NC Dr. Shaw has authored a signi cant contribution to the eld of interpersonal relationships. Masterfully weaving profound Biblical truths together with deep psychological insights, he creates a beautiful mosaic of relational learning, healing and growth. is outstanding book leads the reader into a powerful process of personal discipleship and practical development in their relationship with God, themselves and others. —Jared Pingleton, Psy.D., Vice President of Professional Development, American Association of Christian Counselors, Forest, Virginia

Are human beings a mere product of the cosmos with no future in eternity? Or are we infinitely more valuable than any other creatures on earth? Can we put a price tag on human life? How should we treat marginal members of society: those whiling away empty days in nursing homes, the terminally ill, the unborn child? Norman Geisler believes that many of us have become confused about these vital issues. In 'Knowing the Truth about Creation', he delves into the biblical, philosophical, and scientific case for the Christian view of creation. The result is a fascinating look at creation and the Creator.

Did Lucy know God? Could Neanderthals talk? Was Ardi self-conscious? These are the strange new breed of questions emerging as we discover more and more about our prehistoric origins--questions about knowing. While fossil digs and carbon dating tell a remarkable story about the bones and times of our ancient ancestors, we cannot help wondering what they knew, and when. Exploring such questions Original Knowing takes contemporary science as seriously as religious tradition and searches for the story behind this odd creature who senses more to the universe than meets the eye. In limestone bluffs and butterfly migrations, from Stone Age tool-making to Sumerian beer-making, clues are sought to better understand this strange mind that ponders the origins of its own existence. When do babies point, and why does it matter? What does throwing a Frisbee reveal about our distant ancestors? Is language the key to our minds as many believe? Or perhaps the heart of knowing rests in something more basic, in a smile, and the powerful social abilities at work allowing us to sense a depth to life--to our own lives--a depth that our minds help us glimpse if only through a glass darkly.

Philosophy of Religion is marked by controversy over which philosophical accounts do justice to core religious beliefs. Many Wittgenstinian philosophers are accused by analytic philosophers of religion of distorting these beliefs. In Whose God? Which Tradition?, the accusers stand accused of the same by leading philosophers in the Thomist and Reformed traditions. Their criticisms alert us to the dangers of uncritical acceptance of dominant philosophical traditions, and to the need to do justice to the conceptual uniqueness of the reality of God. The dissenting voices breathe new life into the central issues concerning the nature of belief in God.

This book looks at the traditional answer to the question of man’s freedom on earth - the answer that holds that for man to be free he needs to be made to become a perpetual subject. And dismisses it. This work submits that man is not born to be a subject but a free man. Because it contends that, contrary to Rousseau’s thoughts, man is born in chains and that it is these chains that he must learn to break to be free. It subsequently submits that for man to be able to break his chains he needs to be made to become his true self and shows how to make man become his true self.

God delivered me from my own hands of destruction after my first love was taken away from me. He used that loss to show me His love and redemption plan and to restore me to my rightful place as His beloved one who is one with Him. I live in the city of Paulsboro, New Jersey, and am the mother of five children and grandmother of two grandchildren whom I love dearly. They are who God used in shaping me and teaching me my place on Earth. Their names are Wisdom, Job, Faith, Joshua, and Emmanuel. This is who God told me I am. One day, when I was crying my heart out to Him in so much pain, He told me to write down the names of my children, and then He said to me, You are the power of the childrens names that I birthed within you, Sandra. Then, He told me to look up the meaning of my name. It means Im a helper of mankind. God said, This is why your life went the way it did, because of what is birthed within you and My making of you. You are more powerful than you know now because of all you have faced in life. But I am with you too showing you my will. The Lord created me for purpose, and I am living with purpose.
