Writing History As A Prophet written by Elisabeth Wesseling and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991-01-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

This is a postmodernist history of the historical novel with special attention to the political implications of the postmodernist attitude toward the past. Beginning with the poetics of Sir Walter Scott, Wesseling moves via a global survey of 19th century historical fiction to modernist innovations in the genre. Noting how the self-reflexive strategy enables a novelist to represent an episode from the past alongside the process of gathering and formulating historical knowledge, the author discusses the elaboration of this strategy, introduced by novelists such as Virginia Woolf and William Faulkner, in the work of, among others, Julian Barnes, Jay Cantor, Robert Coover and Graham Swift.Wesseling also shows how postmodernist writers attempt to envisage alternative sequences for historical events. Deliberately distorting historical facts, authors of such uchronian fiction, like Thomas Pynchon, Ishmael R. Read, Salman Rushdie and Gunter Grass, imagine what history looks like from the perspective of the losers, rather than the winners.

Education students are continually asked to reflect upon their own philosophy of education and how it relates to their teaching practice. Philosophy of Education in Historical Perspective: Third Edition focuses on major educational philosophies that have had an impact on Western education and helps the reader to make sense of past and current trends and to place them in a historical context. This third edition is updated to correspond with the increasingly swift changes that have been taking place in education. As we move forward into the twenty-first century, it is hard to recall that only twenty years ago, computers were not part of standard classroom equipment. This widely-accessible edition will update the second with another look at postmodernism as it has continued to develop in the past fifty years.

Histories of Postmodernism reexamines the history of the constellation of ideas and thinkers associated with postmodernism. The increasingly dominant historical narrative depicts a relatively smooth development of ideas from Friedrich Nietzsche and Martin Heidegger, through a range of French theorists, most notably Jacques Derrida and Michel Foucault, to contemporary American thinkers such as Richard Rorty, Edward Said, and Judith Butler. Histories of Postmodernism challenges this narrative by highlighting the local contexts of relevant theorists and thus the crucial distinctions that divide successive articulations of the themes and concepts associated with postmodernism. As postmodern ideas traveled from nineteenth-century Germany to mid-twentieth-century France and on to the contemporary United States, so the relevant theorists transformed that heritage within the context of particular intellectual traditions and specific political and aesthetic issues.
