The channels and mechanisms of knowledge flows define the links that make up production and innovation systems. As such, they relate directly or indirectly to all policies that affect such systems. Knowledge flows are also directly related to intellectual property protection policies and competition policies that create the infrastructure supporting various forms of formal interaction among economic agents in production and innovation systems. Knowledge Flows in European Industry presents the results of an extensive research programme funded by the European Commission to empirically appraise the dissemination of knowledge relevant to the innovative activities of European manufacturing and service sectors. It explores the extent, density, and mechanism of innovation-related knowledge flows affecting the innovative capacity of European industry and the mechanisms that support such flows, as well as examining incentives to access and transmit results and the determinants of knowledge transmission. Featuring contributions from leading international scholars including Anthony Arundel and Bent Dalum, this interdisciplinary volume focuses on questions of interest to regional, national, and pan-European science, technology and innovation policy, and will be an important read for those involved in business and management as well as those in the field of economics.

The role that small firms and entrepreneurship play in economic development has been particularly contentious. Joseph Schumpeter (1911), in his early work, argued that through a process of "creative destruction," small and new firms would serve as agents of change and a catalyst for innovation and growth. But, he later rescinded this view, instead concluding that large corporations were the engines of growth. Just as it seemed that a consensus had emerged among scholars and policy makers that small business was at best superfluous and at worst a drag on growth and economic development, David Birch provided evidence that, in fact, small firms were the engines of job creation. The early skepticism of challenge to Birch's findings revolved around methodology and measurement. However, a wave of subsequent studies by different authors, spanning different time periods, sectors, and even countries, generally confirmed Birch's original findings-for most developed countries and in most time periods, small business has provided most of the job creation.

The readers will benefit from different frameworks, concepts and industrial case studies on knowledge capture and reuse. The book contains a number of invited papers from leading practitioners in the field and a small number of selected papers from active researchers. The book starts by providing the foundation for micro knowledge management through knowledge systematisation, analysing the nature of knowledge and by evaluating verification and validation technology for knowledge based system of frameworks for knowledge capture, reuse and development. A number integration are also provided. Web based framework for knowledge capture and delivery is becoming increasingly popular. Evolutionary computing is also used to automate design knowledge capture. The book demonstrates frameworks and techniques to capture knowledge from people, data and process and reuse the knowledge using an appropriate tool in the business. Therefore, the book bridges the gap between the theory and practice. The 'theory to practice' chapter discusses about virtual communities of practice, Web based approaches, case based reasoning and ontology driven systems for the knowledge management. The concept of concurrent engineering (CE) was first developed in the 1980s. Now often referred to as transdiciplinary engineering, it is based on the idea that different phases of a product life cycle should be conducted concurrently and initiated as early as possible within the Product Creation Process (PCP). The main goal of CE is to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the PCP and reduce errors in later phases, as well as incorporating considerations – including environmental implications – for the full lifecycle of the product. It has become a substantive methodology in many industries, and has also been adopted in the development of new services and service support. This book presents the proceedings of the 25th ISPE Inc. International Conference on Transdisciplinary Engineering, held in Modena, Italy, in July 2018. This international conference attracts researchers, industry experts, students, and government representatives interested in recent transdisciplinary engineering research, advancements and applications. The book contains 120 peer-reviewed papers, selected from 259 submissions from all continents of the world, ranging from the theoretical and conceptual to papers addressing industrial best practice, and is divided into 11 sections reflecting the themes addressed in the conference program and addressing topics as diverse as industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing; human-centered design; modeling, simulation and virtual design; and knowledge and data management among others. With an overview of the latest research results, product creation processes and related methodologies, this book will be of interest to researchers, design practitioners and educators alike.
