The primary aim of this book is to give the reader an introduction into a formal framework to handle uncertainty and vageness with numerical methods. These phenomena are analysed with emphasis on a sound mathematical modelling and therefore some mathematics (probability theory, measure theory, graph theory) adapted to the authors needs is included in the book to develop a sound basis and to get a selfcontained book. The authors handle (all) important standard and nonstandard numerical approaches to handle uncertainty and vagueness: probabilistic methods, mass distribution, \(L\)-sets, certainty factors, fuzzy sets and belief functions. These different approaches to handle uncertainty and vagueness are expressed in terms of the introduced mathematics, advantages/disadvantages and the area of applications of these approaches are discussed. The integration of the approaches with knowledge representation techniques is shown with small but illustrative examples. The authors show, that the combination of knowledge representation and (the presented) modelling approaches can be done without giving up sound mathematical modelling. They also discuss consistency and adequacy of several commercial used models (within expert systems) to handle uncertainty and vagenuess. The intention of this book is to fill the gap between a sound mathematical modelling of uncertainty and vagueness and the practical usage of different approaches within a knowledge representation. This explains the formal presentation which sometimes requires a deep reading to understand all important aspects. The formal representation of the book does not make it easy for a reader to get information on special 'modelling approaches' without reading all preceding parts especially the mathematical basis and without a sound mathematical background at all. But nevertheless this book provides a good basis to get more consistent and adequate handling of uncertainty and vagueness in knowledge based systems.

In this book the consequent use of probability theory is proposed for handling uncertainty in expert systems. It is shown that methods violating this suggestion may have dangerous consequences (e.g., the Dempster-Shafer rule and the method used in MYCIN). The necessity of some requirements for a correct combining of uncertain information in expert systems is demonstrated and suitable rules are provided. The possibility is taken into account that interval estimates are given instead of exact information about probabilities. For combining information containing interval estimates rules are provided which are useful in many cases.

Problems can arise whenever inferencing is attempted on a knowledge base that is incomplete. Our work shows that data mining techniques can be applied to fill in incomplete areas in Bayesian Knowledge Bases (BKBs), as well as in other knowledge-based systems utilizing probabilistic representations. The problem of inconsistency in BKBs has been addressed in previous work, where reinforcement learning techniques from neural networks were applied. However, the issue of automatically solving incompleteness in BKBs has yet to be addressed. Presently, incompleteness in BKBs is repaired through the application of traditional knowledge acquisition techniques. We show how association rules can be extracted from databases in order to replace excluded information and express missing relationships. A methodology for incorporating those results while maintaining a consistent knowledge base is also included.
