This book offers a truly interdisciplinary exploration of our patterns of engagement with politics, news, and information in current high-choice information environments. Putting forth the notion that high-choice information environments may contribute to increasing misperceptions and knowledge resistance rather than greater public knowledge, the book offers insights into the processes that influence the supply of misinformation and factors influencing how and why people expose themselves to and process information that may support or contradict their beliefs and attitudes. A team of authors from across a range of disciplines address the phenomena of knowledge resistance and its causes and consequences at the macro- as well as the micro-level. In this book, Morten Bay provocatively questions whether or not truth in media is lost and, furthermore, whether humans can perceive objective reality or, as many neuroscientists and philosophers now believe, we all perceive different realities constructed through predictive processing. As affective polarization continues to render American democracy increasingly dysfunctional – a situation largely inflamed by media – Bay calls for a cultural shift in which these two conditions are reconciled. Drawing on political philosophy, this book presents an ethics that holds up responsible media conduct as a democratic duty of all media users. This shift in ethical frameworks carries with it different implications for a variety of audiences, including individuals, media platforms and corporations, media practitioners and journalists, media studies scholars, and society more broadly. Each stakeholder involved will need to reconsider their approach to media and reality – individuals must accept that everyone’s perceptions of reality are different; platforms and corporations must cease irresponsible practices that dissociate realities and stoke division; practitioners and journalists must develop more nuanced epistemologies beyond ‘The Truth’, and scholars must redefine media by foregrounding epistemology, pluralism, and physicality in media theory. Collectively, Bay argues, we must come to a new understanding of reality as a plurality of realities – a plureality.

This book offers a systematic inquiry into how, why, and with what consequences media affects governments and the standing of prime ministers. It aims at an understanding of how media has caused institutional effects in government, as well as at advancing a unified theory of government communication. The author develops a logic of centralization and applies it to one case, Sweden. Government communication has been institutionalized, tightened and centralized with the prime minister and has changed irreversibly. Analysis of how the government communication system has evolved, mainly in its institutional structures, suggests that the shift to centralization arose more out of necessity than choice. For prime ministers most of this is about finding ways to ensure that the entire government respond to media uniformly. As governments face a set of functional demands from media, different kinds of media, uniformity has been a paramount objective. Nevertheless, this development involves shifting dynamics of intra-executive relations and a shift of power away from ministries to the prime minister’s office; the apex of political power. The prime minister has been empowered at the expense of ministers through the concentration of power and resources to the executive centre. That is partly because of media, which reinforces political hierarchies. That and the centralized control of government news in turn raises further questions about democratic governance and the nature of modern-day governing.

This book offers a systematization of the recourse to political incivility by different subjects and in different contexts. The authors argue that incivility has now become a strategic resource that can be used by various actors in the public arena to achieve specific goals. We are referring not only to traditional political subjects, but also to journalists, citizens, movements and protest groups, that is to a plurality of actors who, from different angles, contribute to the construction of the “political spectacle”. This resource can be activated according to circumstances and conveniences, whether their nature be political (to place an issue at the center of public debate or a new actor in the offer range), mediatic (to achieve an increase in visibility or viewership) or relational (to expand one’s visibility and centrality in social media). The book identifies common elements linking the different levels of use of incivility, which can be traced in uncivil forms of communication. These are their expressive power (memorable gestures and unequivocal messages, which are immediately recognizable and visible), their aggregation power (they build group identities, and consolidate allegiances and bonds) and their mobilization power (they galvanize people, and inspire them to participate and take action).
