In the three hundred years after defeating the Thandol Empire, Mirikami formed the Galactic Police Force. It isn't a cop-on-the-corner force. The GPF is paramilitary with naval assets, patrolling Federation space, and inside the former Empire. The GPF guards against threats by the old Empire's aggressive species. A murderous Finth pack is secretly mining rare earth minerals on a clueless new alien colony, selling via intermediaries to the Planetary Union. The minerals maintain Kobani superconducting physiology for billions of newly transformed PU citizens. Using supply control, the Finth hope to provoke a war between the PU and their Federation competitor. Both need rare elements for their populations. A Federation distracted by war would allow the Finth to carve a new empire from the old fragments. To keep mineral thefts secret, alien miners die nightly in the jaws and claws of Finth Hunter-Killer packs, simulating wild animal attacks out of the unexplored wilderness. They don't know they need help. When it arrives, it looks worse than the problem.A Thandol Emperor of one faction enslaved a nearby species. Stewart Macdougal, the retired first Federation President, vanished on a mission to investigate the reports. The Olt'kitapi reveals he's missing to Mirikami, and innocently describe how they know precisely where he is. The embedded Kobani Comtaps, based on an Olt'kitapi design, has a hitherto unknown tracking capability. Stewart's life is in imminent danger, so Mirikami and his wife Maggi must Jump immediately to rescue him. It doesn't go as planned, but the fireworks are impressive.Problems continue for Mirikami and the GPF. The Thack Delos reveal new technology after they draw him and Ambassador Fisher into a trap. Tired of paying reparations for nuclear weapon use in the last war, they can void the contract if the negotiators are dead. A Kobani lives too damned long, and they have a cure! A visit by a GPF contact team to a species named the Corelians goes horribly awry. Before humans even left their home system, their brief radio broadcast to the galaxy proved there was life elsewhere. Faster Jump travel makes a visit practical, if not welcome. Finally, an elevated species, the Silha, make an offer to the Olt'kitapi and the Kobani, opening a vast region to them. Instant wormhole travel to ten thousand galaxies of a supercluster, if they support a project. The Olt'kitapi is to build multispecies habitats in each galaxy, and the GPF to give protection from hostiles. Its a risky fun adventure for the bored and long-lived Kobani. There's a scouting visit to Andromeda, using five replicated ships from the Silha. Who knew Andromeda was that organized? The dominant species control everything, and they don't like intruders. The great adventure is ending in total disaster before it starts. Pulling live rabbits out of an empty hat is the least of Mirikami's problem. He's trying to survive the day, and there are a million ways he won't.

This is Book 4 of the popular and high rated Koban Series. The Kobani continue their offensives against the Krall, attacking production worlds, and destroy or steal ships from the Krall fleet, which the enemy needs to resupply their invasions. The Kobani create a multispecies settlement on Haven, a gentler habitable world near deadly Koban. They gain the trust and technological assistance of freed former Krall slave species, the Torki, Prada, and resurrected Raspani. Their ranks and Mind Tap learned skills are increased by spec ops recruits from Human Space. Mirikami engineers an assault on the Krall base world, K1, in cooperation with a skeptical human navy by sharing new technology, revealing Kobani physical capabilities, and providing intelligence on new Krall invasion plans. Despite knowing the Kobani use illegal gene mods, the navy high command decides to hit the Krall first, with the help of their secretive tough Kobani ally. After the attack, a mauled Krall fleet still heavily outnumbers the navy, and the damaged human fleet withdraws. A vengeful Krall warlord, the Kobani's old nemesis Telour, summons an ancient Olt'kitapi ship that can shatter an entire planet. He has a devious plan for remote strikes that will initiate delayed deaths on multiple human worlds, all before a ship imbued with morality can learn it's been duped. Telour wants the home world of humanity to see death approaching, one world at a time. Mirikami expected a strong Krall reaction, but not this extreme. He scrambles to head off inexorable destruction of multiple planets. Failing to save some worlds, he's the final hope for billions of people on others. The Kobani will need the strength and speed their genes provide, plus luck to save humanity. Book 1 Koban, Book 2 Koban: The Mark of Koban, Book 3 Koban: Rise of the Kobani

Already faster and more powerful than the last 17 species that they have destroyed or subjugated, the Krall have set their sights on humankind. After testing humans on their future home world of Koban and finding them worthy opponents, the Krall start a war of slow extermination with the rest of humanity. The war is intended to last generations as they apply their own version of “natural selection” to cull their weaker warriors in combat, purifying the Krall gene pool with finest warriors for breeding. Why? The Krall desire to rule the galaxy someday, from their future home world of Koban, where the impossibly fast and powerful animals have proven to be too fast and strong for them to match. Only through the attrition of war will the Krall perfect their bloodline to become the masters of Koban. When the Krall departed Koban to start their war with humanity, they destroyed the protections that kept their prisoners safe. They left the human test subjects to fall victim to high gravity, and the deadly predators. Big mistake. The bio scientist left behind enhance the human genome with Koban genes, forming the next generations of humans. They are becoming what the Krall sought to be. The fastest, most powerful species in the galaxy. The men and women trapped on Koban, locked in a struggle for their own survival for twenty years, return to the stars to help defend Human Space. The Krall have had their way with human worlds, killing when and where they wish.Outnumbered, the new Kobani will now take the war to the Krall.

Geometric group theory is the study of the interplay between groups and the spaces they act on, and has its roots in the works of Henri Poincaré, Felix Klein, J.H.C. Whitehead, and Max Dehn. Office Hours with a Geometric Group Theorist brings together leading experts who provide one-on-one instruction on key topics in this exciting and relatively new field of mathematics. It's like having office hours with your most trusted math professors. An essential primer for undergraduates making the leap to graduate work, the book begins with free groups—actions of free groups on trees, algorithmic questions about free groups, the ping-pong lemma, and automorphisms of free groups. It goes on to cover several large-scale geometric invariants of groups, including quasi-isometry groups, Dehn functions, Gromov hyperbolicity, and asymptotic dimension. It also delves into important examples of groups, such as Coxeter groups, Thompson's groups, right-angled Artin groups, lamplighter groups, mapping class groups, and braid groups. The tone is conversational throughout, and the instruction is driven by examples. Accessible to students who have taken a first course in abstract algebra, Office Hours with a Geometric Group Theorist also features numerous exercises and in-depth projects designed to engage readers and provide jumping-off points for research projects.

Sometime in the not-too-distant future ... unbeknownst to Earth, the Galaxy is home to a number of spacefaring societies. This confederation enforces a strict protocol forbidding any contact with civilizations that have not yet achieved both a substantial spacefaring capability and sufficient maturity to control the technology explosion before triggering their own extinction. While this policy is intended to only bring in peaceful new members, matters change entirely when the confederation is threatened by some unknown entity - is the menace real or imagined? The confederation decides to break with the rules and sends a delegate to Earth to hire one of the supposedly belligerent Earthlings to investigate and to revive the confederation’s long-unused starfleet. The Earthman agrees, but demands a high price: should he succeed, the confederation will have to accept Earth as a new member. As the threat becomes ever more acute, the question soon becomes which mission will prove harder - saving the confederation or convincing it to accept the deal! The extensive appendix, written in non-technical language, reviews the scientific and technological topics underlying the plot - ranging from the Fermi paradox, space travel and artificial/collective intelligence to theories on possible universal convergences in technological and biological development.

The proliferation of new digital technologies has given rise to an entirely changed media landscape and revolutionized how we seek entertainment. Older entertainment media like novels, radio, and film have been joined by a host of digital media that smartphones allow us to carry almost anywhere and at all times, from video games and social media to video on demand services. This unprecedented ubiquity of entertainment media calls for new and more sophisticated theories that help us understand the fascination that different entertainment media exert on us and how they change the human experience. The Oxford Handbook of Entertainment Theory surveys and furthers the most influential psychology-driven research on media entertainment to illuminate how people are drawn into media experiences. The 41 chapters in this Handbook not only offer fresh perspectives on established theories but also introduce emerging models and highlight the importance of considering the diverse backgrounds of media users when conducting research. They also cover the motivations and reactions of media users in relationship to different types of media, the trend towards interactive media such as video games and virtual reality, and particularly popular media contents like sexuality, violence, sports, and the news. As the most comprehensive overview of psychology-based research on media entertainment available, this Handbook is an invaluable resource for seasoned researchers and those beginning to learn about the field alike.

Seki was a Japanese mathematician in the seventeenth century known for his outstanding achievements, including the elimination theory of systems of algebraic equations, which preceded the works of Étienne Bézout and Leonhard Euler by 80 years. Seki was a contemporary of Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, although there was apparently no direct interaction between them. The Mathematical Society of Japan and the History of Mathematics Society of Japan hosted the International Conference on History of Mathematics in Commemoration of the 300th Posthumous Anniversary of Seki in 2008. This book is the official record of the conference and includes supplements of collated texts of Seki's original writings with notes in English on these texts. Hikosaburo Komatsu (Professor emeritus, The University of Tokyo), one of the editors, is known for partial differential equations and hyperfunction theory, and for his study on the history of Japanese mathematics. He served as the President of the International Congress of Mathematicians Kyoto 1990.
