In 1927, Sherlock Holmes wrote "The Case-Book of Sherlock Sherlock Holmes" that captures the social and historical context of the latter half of the 19th as well as early twentieth centuries, an era of tremendous change as well as advancement in both Britain and the rest of the world. The stories can be appreciated more if the context is understood. Some significant historical aspects which pertain to the collection are outlined below: Victorian and Edwardian Eras: Although "The Case-Book" dates from the 1920s, a number of the tales are set during the late Victorian or Edwardian periods. The time period witnessed substantial industrial, scientific, and cultural transformations. The British Empire emerged, technology as well as science advanced quickly, along with a stringent social hierarchy developed during this time. Technological and Scientific Advances: . The telegraph, telephone, along with developments in forensic science were among the amazing technical advancements in the late 19th as well as early twentieth century. Holmes' investigation methods oftentimes reflect these advancements, being excellent in forensic science and deductive reasoning. The Dynamics of Urbanization along with Social Change: The period saw substantial urbanisation, with London becoming a bustled city. Numerous Holmes stories provide an urban setting which is vital, because the detective must navigate the complicated social and physical terrain of the city. Colonialism as well as the British Empire: The stories occasionally mirror the views and reality of the British Empire during its peak. Some of the narratives are subtle in highlighting themes of colonialism and Britain' broader global reach. Criminal Investigation Methods: The area of criminal investigation and police methods were also evolving during this time. Though Holmes utilized fictional methods, they frequently mirrored or predicted advancements in forensic science.

The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle - is the final set of twelve (out of a total of fifty-six) Sherlock Holmes short stories by British writer Arthur Conan Doyle first published in the Strand Magazine between October 1921 and April 1927. Title of collection: The first British edition of the collection, published by John Murray, and the first American edition, published by George H. Doran Co., were both published in June 1927. However, they had slightly different titles. The title of the British collection was The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes (hyphenated "Case-Book"), whereas the title of the American edition was The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes ("Case Book" as two words). Further confusing the issue of the title, some later publishers released the collection under the title The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes ("Casebook" as a single word). Contents: The first edition of The Case-Book, published by John Murray in 1927, does not present the stories in the order in which they were published:[2] 1 The Adventure of the Illustrious Client 2 The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier 3 The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone 4 The Adventure of the Three Gables 5 The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire 6 The Adventure of the Three Garridebs 7 The Problem of Thor Bridge 8 The Adventure of the Creeping Man 9 The Adventure of the Lion's Mane 10 The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger 11 The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place 12 The Adventure of the Retired Colourman

I fear that Mr. Sherlock Holmes may become like one of those popular tenors who, having outlived their time, are still tempted to make repeated farewell bows to their indulgent audiences. This must cease and he must go the way of all flesh, material or imaginary. One likes to think that there is some fantastic limbo for the children of imagination, some strange, impossible place where the beaux of Fielding may still make love to the belles of Richardson, where Scott’s heroes still may strut, Dickens’s delightful Cockneys still raise a laugh, and Thackeray’s worldlings continue to carry on their reprehensible careers. Perhaps in some humble corner of such a Valhalla, Sherlock and his Watson may for a time find a place, while some more astute sleuth with some even less astute comrade may fill the stage which they have vacated. His career has been a long one — though it is possible to exaggerate it; decrepit gentlemen who approach me and declare that his adventures formed the reading of their boyhood do not meet the response from me which they seem to expect. One is not anxious to have one’s personal dates handled so unkindly. As a matter of cold fact, Holmes made his debut in A Study in Scarlet and in The Sign of Four, two small booklets which appeared between 1887 and 1889. It was in 1891 that “A Scandal in Bohemia,” the first of the long series of short stories, appeared in The Strand Magazine. The public seemed appreciative and desirous of more, so that from that date, thirty-nine years ago, they have been produced in a broken series which now contains no fewer than fifty-six stories, republished in The Adventures, The Memoirs, The Return, and His Last Bow. and there remain these twelve published during the last few years which are here produced under the title of The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes. He began his adventures in the very heart of the later Victorian era, carried it through the all-too-short reign of Edward, and has managed to hold his own little niche even in these feverish days. Thus it would be true to say that those who first read of him, as young men, have lived to see their own grown-up children following the same adventures in the same magazine. It is a striking example of the patience and loyalty of the British public. I had fully determined at the conclusion of The Memoirs to bring Holmes to an end, as I felt that my literary energies should not be directed too much into one channel. That pale, clear-cut face and loose-limbed figure were taking up an undue share of my imagination. I did the deed, but fortunately no coroner had pronounced upon the remains, and so, after a long interval, it was not difficult for me to respond to the flattering demand and to explain my rash act away. I have never regretted it, for I have not in actual practice found that these lighter sketches have prevented me from exploring and finding my limitations in such varied branches of literature as history, poetry, historical novels, psychic research, and the drama. Had Holmes never existed I could not have done more, though he may perhaps have stood a little in the way of the recognition of my more serious literary work.

The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes contains twelve stories written about the legendary consulting detective by his creator Arthur Conan Doyle. Like all the other Sherlock Holmes adventures, these stories were originally published in the Strand Magazine, in this case between October 1921 and April 1927. What sets the stories collected in the Case Book of Sherlock Holmes from all other anthologies is that that they represent the winding down of a literary sensation. These are the last original mysteries of Holmes to be published in the Strand and this is the last collection of original stories penned by Doyle.Although new editions sometimes reorder the stories, the order in which they appeared when The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes was originally published (in chronological ordering according to their serial publication date) is as follows: "The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone" (1921)"The Problem of Thor Bridge" (1922)"The Adventure of the Creeping Man" (1923)"The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire" (1924)"The Adventure of the Three Garridebs" (1924)"The Adventure of the Illustrious Client" (1924)"The Adventure of the Three Gables" (1926)"The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier" (1926)"The Adventure of the Lion's Mane" (1926)"The Adventure of the Retired Colourman" (1926)"The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger" (1927)"The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place" (1927)Some of the selections that that appear in The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes are the only remaining original Holmes stories written by Doyle that are not in the public domain. More will be added according to copyright law expiration dates until the year 2023, at which point all of the Holmes adventures will officially be considered public domain.
