Inveterate Walkers, Literary Minds: Bengal’s Pilgrims and Their Himalayan Journeys brings under its critical focus the writings of Bengal’s travellers (mostly pilgrims) who went, on foot, into Himalayan trails from the mid-nineteenth to the early and mid-twentieth century. Unlike many European travellers and climbers in the age of empire, who saw the mountain as an obstacle overcoming which was a matter of individual and national pride, these modest walkers, unkempt and raddled in their meagre ways of travel, produced a discourse of surrender in their intimate and reflecting engagement with the mountains. The book examines the writings of Jadunath Sharbadhikary, the first among Bengal’s pilgrims whose Himalayan travels were published as a book and the more popular writers including Jaladhar Sen, Umaprasad Mukhopadhyay and Abadhut. It also traces emergent selfhoods and complex subjectivities of women travellers in particular, such as Ratnamala Devi, Rani Chanda and Nabaneeta Deb Sen whose accounts reveal both guarded, hesitant voices and self-assured, confident enunciation of the self.

Solo written by Indrajeet More and has been published by Penguin Random House India Private Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-03-18 with Travel categories.

Barely a year into college, Indrajeet More is offered to host a travel show on budget backpacking across India. As he undertakes a year-long journey across thirteen cities, what unfolds is a string of surreal life experiences—from getting lost in the forests of coastal Karnataka to camping amid the snowy peaks of the Himalayas, from hunting for the best toddy shop in rural Kerala to dancing to the beats of Naga folk songs. Through this journey, Indrajeet discovers novelty and relatability in diverse cultures by reflecting on his upbringing in a Maharashtrian household. He navigates the inevitable boredom of solo travel and the anxiety of uncertainty, ultimately seeking belongingness in the most unfamiliar of places. Solo is a raw, unfiltered backpacker’s gaze at contemporary India, about learning to read people beyond language, understanding food beyond ingredients, hearing stories beyond regions and, most importantly, finding a sense of home away from home.

This book offers a comprehensive exploration of the critical issues surrounding SDGs 9, 11 and 12, delving into the multifaceted challenges and innovative solutions that define these vital fields. Civil engineering plays a pivotal role in achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) by providing the foundational infrastructure necessary for sustainable development across various sectors. From designing resilient transportation systems to constructing eco-friendly buildings, civil engineers are at the forefront of creating solutions that promote economic growth, social equity, and environmental sustainability. One of the primary goals of civil engineering in the context of sustainable development is to ensure access to safe and reliable infrastructure for all, which aligns with SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. This involves designing and constructing roads, bridges, railways, airports, and ports that not only facilitate economic activities but also minimize environmental impact and enhance social inclusivity. For instance, civil engineers are increasingly incorporating green infrastructure techniques such as permeable pavements, green roofs, and rain gardens to manage stormwater runoff, mitigate urban heat island effects, and improve air quality in urban areas, contributing to SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. Moreover, civil engineers play a crucial role in addressing global challenges such as climate change and resource depletion, which are central to several SDGs. By integrating principles of sustainability into their designs and practices, civil engineers contribute to SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. This includes implementing renewable energy systems, and promoting circular economy, sustainable materials and construction techniques, recycled materials, waste to resource techniques, lean construction, etc. to reduce carbon emissions and minimize resource consumption throughout the life cycle of infrastructure projects.
