Zum Komplizen der Gewalt wird, wer davor die Augen verschliesst. Die Beiträge dieses Buches wollen für die vielfältigen Arten überwindbarer Gewalt sensibilisieren. Sie konzentrieren sich auf Phänomene kollektiver Gewalt. Sie nehmen bewusst sehr unterschiedliche Erfahrungszusammenhänge, Problemfelder und Kontexte in den Blick, um einerseits die ungeheure Vielfalt, andererseits die bedrängende Nähe und Gegenwart heutiger Formen von Gewalt erkennen zu lassen. Die Themen des Bandes waren Gegenstand einer öffentlichen Vortragsreihe des Collegium generale der Universität Bern im Wintersemester 2003/04.

Masterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2009 im Fachbereich Soziologie - Wohnen und Stadtsoziologie, Note: 1,5, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Berlin Graduate School of Social Sciences (BGSS)), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die brennenden Autos bei gewalttätigen Ausschreitungen in Pariser Vororten erregten 2005 viel Aufmerksamkeit über die Grenzen Frankreichs hinweg, denn die randalierenden Franzosen mit Migrationshintergrund schienen die Grundwerte der Republik, die stolz ist auf ihre Ideale der Universalität und Gleichheit, in Frage zu stellen. Als die Ausschreitungen in Paris im November 2005 ausbrachen, stellten Berichte über das Thema häufig die Frage an Politiker und Kriminologen, ob solche massiven Krawalle auch in Deutschland vorkommen könnten. Viele Befragte waren der Meinung, dass es sicherlich das Potenzial und mögliche Auslöser für solche Ausschreitungen gäbe, denn die zunehmende Frustration unter arbeits- und ausbildungslosen Jugendlichen in den sozialen Brennpunkten schien ganz ähnlich wie in Paris. Der ehemalige innenpolitische Sprecher der CDU-Bundestagsfraktion Wolfgang Bosbach zum Beispiel beurteilte die Situation kritisch: „Auch wenn die gesellschaftliche Realität bei uns anders ist, sollten wir uns nicht der Illusion hingeben, dass so etwas wie in Frankreich bei uns nicht geschehen könnte“ (zitiert in Frankfurter Allgemeine, 5. November 2005). Politiker in Deutschland wie der ehemalige Innenminister Brandenburgs Jörg Schönbaum (CDU) kritisierten, dass die Integration für eine zu lange Zeit nicht ernst genommen wurde, was zu Gettoisierung und zusätzlicher Gewalt führte (ebd.). Bis heute sind gewalttätige Ausschreitungen jugendlicher Migranten in der Form wie in Paris auf Berliner Straßen allerdings nicht zu sehen gewesen. Wie Ottersbach und Zitzmann (2009) schreiben: „Die Bilder aus Frankreich von Straßenschlachten, Verfolgungsjagden und brennenden Autos haben bisher nach wie vor für Deutsche eher einen exotischen Charakter“ (S.10). Die Krawalle zwischen türkischen Jugendlichen und Berliner Polizisten im Kreuzberger Wrangelkiez 2006 sind eins der wenigen vergleichbaren Ereignisse, doch sie hielten nur einen Tag an und blieben auf den Stadtteil beschränkt. Der wichtigste Grund für den Vergleich sind die Integrationsmodelle in Deutschland und Frankreich, die sich in ihrer Prägung durch die traditionellen Nationalbilder stark unterscheiden. Da die Lebenssituation der Jugendlichen mit Migrationshintergrund in den beiden Städten im Grunde genommen ähnlich ist, muss der Unterschied im Mobilisierungspotenzial für Krawalle wohl im Feindbild liegen, das die Ausschreitungen motiviert hat.

In recent years, the issue of space has sparked debates in the field of Holocaust Studies. The book demonstrates the transdisciplinary potential of space-related approaches. An international manual is like a world cruise: a once-in-a-lifetime experience. All the more reason to consider carefully whether it is necessary. This can hardly be the case if previous research in the selected field has already been the subject of an earlier review-or even several competing surveys. On the other hand, more thorough study is necessary if the intensity and scope of research are increasing without comprehensive assessments. That was the situation in Western societies when work began on this project in the summer of 1998. It was then, too, that the challenges emerged: any manual, espe cially an international one, is a very special type of text, which is anything but routine. It calls for a special effort: the "state of the art" has to be documented for selected subject areas, and its presentation made as compelling as possible. The editors were delighted, therefore, by the cooperation and commitment shown by the eighty-one contributors from ten countries who were recruited to write on the sixty-two different topics, by the con structive way in which any requests for changes were dealt with, and by the patient re sponse to our many queries. This volume is the result of a long process. It began with the first drafts outlining the structure of the work, which were submitted to various distinguished colleagues. Known as Lemberg in German and Lwów in Polish, the city of L'viv in modern Ukraine was in the crosshairs of imperial and national aspirations for much of the twentieth century. This book tells the compelling story of how its inhabitants (Roman Catholic Poles, Greek Catholic Ukrainians, and Jews) reacted to the sweeping political changes during and after World Wars I and II. The Eastern Front shifted back and forth, and the city changed hands seven times. At the end of each war, L'viv found itself in the hands of a different state. While serious tensions had existed among Poles, Ukrainians/Ruthenians, and Jews in the city, before 1914 eruptions of violence were still infrequent. The changes of political control over the city during World War I led to increased intergroup frictions, new power relations, and episodes of shocking violence, particularly against Jews. The city's incorporation into the independent Polish Republic in November 1918 after a brief period of Ukrainian rule sparked intensified conflict. Ukrainians faced discrimination and political repression under the new government, and Ukrainian nationalists attacked the Polish state. In the 1930s, anti-Semitism increased sharply. During World War II, the city experienced first Soviet rule, then Nazi occupation, and finally Soviet conquest. The Nazis deported and murdered nearly all of the city's large Jewish population, and at the end of the war the Soviet forces expelled the city's Polish inhabitants. Based on archival research conducted in L'viv, Kiev, Warsaw, Vienna, Berlin, and Moscow, as well as an array of contemporary printed sources and scholarly studies, this book examines how the inhabitants of the city reacted to the changes in political control, and how ethnic and national ideologies shaped their dealings with each other. An earlier German version of this volume was published as Kriegserfahrungen in einer multiethnischen Stadt: Lemberg 1914-1947 (2011).
