An impressive solid white dog covered by a mass of heavy cords, the Komondor is a courageous flock guardian breed of the Magyar herdsmen, whose ancestry goes back a millennium. The Komondor's principal role was to protect flocks of large animals on the open plains of Hungary: this vigilant giant canine was a solo act, relying only upon his own instincts and decision-making ability to guard his charges. As the appellation "King of Hungarian Sheepdogs" implies, the breed's great size and imposing musculature command respect, and he is loyal, dignified and ever faithful to his kingdom and those within it. The Komondor's skills as a livestock protector combined with his natural intelligence and guardian instincts translate into a superb watchdog for family and home.Author Joy Levy's experience in the breed traces back over three decades; in this Special Rare-Breed Edition she puts forth her unparalleled knowledge and understanding of the Komondor. Along with her late husband Marion J. Levy, Jr., she imported the first Group- and Best in Show-winning Komondor in 1967, bred many top dogs and served as a member of the Middle Atlantic States Komondor Club and the Komondor Club of America.Included here is a complete history of the breed in Europe and the United States as well as an insightful chapter on the breed's characteristics and personality. Additionally, this volume presents many classic and brand-new photographs of the breed and information on the breed standard, puppy acquisition and rearing, everyday care, training, healthcare, showing and much more.

The Komondor is a large breed of molossers dog that originates from Hungary. The breed is commonly known as the 'Mop Dog,' the 'Hungarian Sheepdog,' and as the 'Hungarian Komondor.' In Hungarian the plural for the breed's name is the Komondorok. The Komondor was originally brought into Hungary by the Cuman, the Turkic speaking nomadic people, during the 12th century. The breed's name references this as 'Korman' translates to 'Cuman' and 'Dor' translates to 'Dog'. Despite the breed being relatively popular in modern times, the Komondor went nearly extinct during World War II due to the fact that invading German troops has to kill the Komondor before they were able to capture the house or farm that the dog guarded. The Komondor has an innate guardian instinct and has therefore traditionally been used to guard livestock. The Komondor is an athletic breed that is powerful enough to chase of any predators that may threaten the livestock it guard. The Komondor has been commonly used to guard sheep from wolves and bears! The Komondor has a long cord-like white coat which provides it with protection against vegetation, predators and the weather. The breed's unique coat also gives it a sheep-like appearance which allows the Komondor to easily camouflage itself amongst the sheep it guards. The breed's ability to camouflage itself allows it to easily surprise potential predators. In modern times the Komondor is an extremely popular choice for a flock guardian in the United States of America, as it easily can protect sheep from coyotes, bears and cougars. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Komondor. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Komondor with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Komondor is known to be a calm, steady and protective breed. It is also known to be loyal to its owner but also independent enough to make its own decisions while guarding a flock. The Komondor is also known to be an incredibly fearless breed and will often put itself in danger to defend its flock. It is important to note that as a working breed, the Komondor has a high amount of energy which needs to be expended. If the Komondor has a buildup of energy it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or hyperactivity. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. This guide has been designed to provide you with both precise and concise information about a Komondor's basic needs to help you provide your pet with the best quality care practices. This guide will give an in-depth explanation on training your Komondor, raising your Komondor from a puppy, grooming, health care and everything in between! "The Komondor: A Complete and Comprehensive Owners Guide to: Buying, Owning, Health, Grooming, Training, Obedience, Understanding and Caring for Your Komondor," by Michael Stonewood is the perfect purchase or gift for a first time Komondor owner. This guide includes sections on caring for a puppy, breeding, health care, training, the basic cost of owning a Komondor and much more. This book is the second edition - the first edition was published by 'Dog Care Professionals.'
