Previous scholarship on recent Muslim Qurʾanic exegesis has mostly focussed on modernising trends, usually remaining within the confines of a single language area. Transcending this hitherto dominating narrow focus, this book offers a comparative analysis of a body of contemporary Sunnite Qurʾanic commentaries from the Arab World, Indonesia and Turkey. It takes into account both the influence of specific local conditions and the common intellectual heritage they rely on. By paying special attention not only to new developments, but also to the embeddedness of contemporary Qurʾanic exegesis into a more than thousand-year-old intellectual tradition, it provides new insights into the religious, academic, political and social context of exegetical practice in the modern Islamic World. Die Forschung zur neueren muslimischen Koranexegese hat sich bislang weitgehend auf modernisierende Trends konzentriert und sich dabei zumeist innerhalb der Grenzen eines Sprachraums bewegt. People in the Middle Ages and the early modern age more often suffered from imprisonment and enslavement than we might have assumed. Incarceration and Slavery in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Age approaches these topics from a wide variety of perspectives and demonstrates collectively the great relevance of the issues involved. Both incarceration and slavery were (and continue to be) most painful experiences, and no one was guaranteed exemption from it. High-ranking nobles and royalties were often the victims of imprisonment and, at times, had to wait many years until their ransom was paid. Similarly, slavery existed throughout Christian Europe and in the Arab world. However, while imprisonment occasionally proved to be the catalyst for major writings and creativity, slaves in the Ottoman empire and in Egypt succeeded in rising to the highest position in society (Janissaries, Mamluks, and others).

The hypothesis that the Gospel of Mark was heavily influenced by Pauline theology and/or epistles was widespread in the nineteenth century, but fell out of favour for much of the twentieth century. In the last twenty years or so, however, this view has begun to attract renewed support, especially in English language scholarship. Die Auseinandersetzungen um den französischen Thron im 14. und 15. Jahrhundert wurden nicht nur militärisch und diplomatisch, sondern auch auf der Ebene der Bilderpolitik geführt. Im Zentrum des Interesses stand dabei der 1270 gestorbene und 1297 heiliggesprochene König Ludwig IX. von Frankreich, dessen "image" alle beteiligten Gruppen – Kapetinger, Plantagenet, Valois, Navarra und Burgund – zu ihren Zwecken zu formen versuchten. Über das "image" Ludwigs des Heiligen verknüpften sie ihre dynastischen und politischen Interessen - wozu sie sich aller ihnen zur Verfügung stehenden Kommunikationsformen und -medien, wie z. B. Chroniken und Stundenbücher, Urkunden und Siegel, Statuen und fromme Stiftungen, bedienten, um die unterschiedlichsten Öffentlichkeiten zu erreichen. Der Begriff "image" umreisst in Wissenschaft und Alltag im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert das Konzept eines öffentlich wirksamen, sorgsam konstruierten Bildes einer Person oder Institution, das in Politik und Gesellschaft wirkmächtig ist, aber auch immer im Spannungsfeld zwischen "Autor", Medium und Rezipient gedacht werden muss. Ausgehend von der Allgegenwärtigkeit politischer "images" und ihrer Präsenz in den unterschiedlichsten Medien, fragt die Autorin, ob und auf welche Weise "images" im späten Mittelalter entstanden sind, in welchem Verhältnis Text und Bild dabei stehen, ob sie ebenfalls politisch instrumentalisiert wurden und inwiefern sie sich von modernen Ausprägungen des Phänomens unterscheiden.
