Events of violence fundamentally reshape landscapes and places. The contributions in this volume show interdisciplinary perspectives on how violence materially transforms its sites and how linked narratives, discourses, events and actors correlate with one another. The case studies range from ancient to modern times and address military battlefields, militarized borders as well as sites of violence and destruction during the Shoah. As understood by the "Interdisciplinary Research Group on Conflict Landscapes" (Interdisziplinäre Arbeitsgruppe Konfliktlandschaften, IAK) of the University of Osnabrück, this involves the integration of approaches from scientific, social and cultural study fields, which makes the interactions between the material and the discursive level comprehensible in a process of continuous transformation in the developing historical landscapes.

This Element volume provides an up-to-date synthesis of the archaeology of the Roman conquest, combining new theoretical and methodological approaches with the latest fieldwork results. Recent advances in conflict archaeology research are revolutionising our knowledge of Rome's military campaigns in Western and Central Europe, allowing scholars to reassess the impact of the conquest on the indigenous populations. The volume explores different types of material evidence for the Roman wars of conquest, including temporary camps, battlefields, coinage production, and regional settlement patterns. These and other topics are examined using four case studies: Caesar's Gallic Wars, the Cantabrian and Asturian Wars, the Germanic Wars of Augustus, and the Roman conquest of Britain. By focusing on the 'dark sides' of the Roman expansion and reclaiming the memory of the conquered, the Element aims to contribute to a more holistic understanding of the processes of incorporation and integration into the Roman Empire.

The historical investigation of Protestantism has frequently been confined to an internal national framework; and yet Church history of the twentieth century provides ample evidence for the fact that national tendencies have to be interpreted against the background of international developments, and cannot be adequately assessed in isolation. The present volume is an attempt to take this seriously. It contains contributions by scholars from many countries, mostly European. They represent various disciplines: History, Sociology and Church history. The book has four chapters: (1) Transformations and historical turning points in the twentieth century; (2) The world wars and their repercussions for the churches; (3) The post-war period. Totalitarian ideologies as a challenge for the churches; (4) Christian Europe? - Globalization - internationalization.

Film festivals during the Cold War were fraught with the political and social tensions that dominated the world at the time. While film was becoming an increasingly powerful medium, the European festivals in particular established themselves as showcases for filmmakers and their perceptions of reality. At the same time, their prestigious, international character attracted the interest of states and private players. The history of these festivals thus sheds light not only on the films they made available to various publics, but on the cultural policies and political processes that informed their operations. Presenting new research by an international group of younger scholars, Cultural Transfer and Political Conflicts critically investigates postwar history in the context of film festivals reconstructing not only their social background and international dispensation, but also their centrality for cultural transfers between the East, the West and the South during the Cold War.
