Apabila dilihat dari pengorganisasian materi sejarah terutama dalam kurikulum 2013, adalah masuk ke dalam rumpun ilmu-ilmu sosial. Tujuan dari pendidikan ilmu-ilmu sosial (di dalamnya sejarah) dalam kurikulum, adalah untuk mengembangkan kemampuan siswa agar bersikap dan dapat mengambil keputusan dalam menghadapi tantangan kehidupan, dan tuntutan masa depan sebagai warga negara yang bertanggung jawab. Terdapat tujuan khusus yang hanya dimiliki oleh materi mata pelajaran sejarah, dan tidak dimiliki oleh materi mata pelajaran lainnya di dalam kelompok rumpun mata pelajaran ilmu-ilmu sosial, yaitu proses penanaman nilai-nilai terhadap siswa melalui peristiwa sejarah. Selain itu pula yang menjadi karakteristik utama dari mata pelajaran sejarah dibandingkan dengan mata pelajaran lainnya, adalah jika mata pelajaran sejarah lebih terfokus pada materi yang berasal dari kehidupan masa lalu manusia, yang terfokus pada sebuah peristiwa sejarah, sedangkan materi mata pelajaran lain kepada materi yang terkini atau perkembangan terakhir (the state of the art) ( Hasan, 2019, hlm. 62).

Demikian pula para negarawan yang pernah terlibat dalam membuat kebijakan politik negara dan para cendekiawan dari Indonesia maupun Malaysia yang banyak mengkaji hubungan Indonesia dan Malaysia. Untuk bisa memahami bagaimana ‘roller coaster’ hubungan kedua negara, cukup panjang rentang waktu yang dikaji, yaitu sebelum konfrontasi pada tahun 1963 sampai 2010, di mana hubungan kedua negara dalam keadaan mesra, namun penuh ketegangan. Melalui kajian berliku dan panjang, akhirnya ditemukan siapa tokoh sebenarnya di balik dinamika pasang surut hubungan bilateral Indonesia dan Malaysia selama ini. Dan peran apa yang dimainkannya sehingga jatuh banyak korban di kedua belah pihak dan kuatnya kesan negatif yang masih sulit dihilangkan. Ditambah lagi adanya perubahan perilaku generasi muda yang tidak lagi berkiblat seperti orang tua mereka ketika mencari solusi bagi dua bangsa sebudaya ini. Selain itu, tidak adanya political will untuk penyelesaian masalah perbatasan wilayah negara sehingga membuat api dalam sekam tetap membara, sewaktu-waktu konflik bisa terjadi kembali. Oleh karena itu, win-win solution yang memungkinkan juga dibahas dalam naskah ini, semoga bermanfaat bagi kelanggengan kekerabatan kedua bangsa.

Although numerous accounts have been published of the genesis and character of the attempted October 1965 coup in Indonesia, many important aspects of that affair still remain very unclear. The fact that in most accounts so much of the picture has been painted in black and white, and in language of categorical certainty, has served only to paper over the enormous gaps in established knowledge of the event. In his present introduction to the paper here published, Professor Anderson describes the circumstances surrounding its preparation and the reasons why it was not previously published. Indeed, because of the avowedly tentative and provisional character of this early effort, there would normally be no reason to publish it any more than there would have been to publish the scores of other preliminary drafts prepared over the years by scholars working in the Cornell Modern Indonesia Project. However, this draft has been given a unique prominence. For it has been singled out by a number of those who have subsequently written accounts of the attempted coup, among whom all too many have misrepresented the authors' ideas and cited words or phrases of theirs out of context. Thus there are special reasons now for publishing this draft in its entirety - in fairness both to the authors and to all those interested in the events of 1965 - so that readers can make their own assessments rather than having to rely upon doctored extracts and tendentious interpretations by writers hostile to the hypotheses advanced by its authors. I have found myself in disagreement with some of the views presented in this paper; however, I believe that despite the limited materials available to the authors over the few months that they collected and analyzed their data, this draft, which they wrote at the end of 1965, contains a number of important insights and a considerable amount of significant data which other writers have not taken into account. Thus, those interested in understanding the attempted coup of 1965, particularly if they bear in mind the caveats of Professor Anderson's present introduction, should find this paper useful. - George McT. Each year, Israel's young men and women are drafted into compulsory military service and are required to engage directly in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. How is Palestine, and the Palestinians against whom these young Israelis will potentially be required to use force, portrayed in the school system? Nurit Peled-Elhanan argues that the textbooks used in the school system are laced with a pro-Israel ideology, and that they play a part in priming Israeli children for military service.
