Konrad Adenauer est une figure centrale de la vie politique allemande au XXe siècle. Catholique, rhénan et européen sont les qualificatifs souvent évoqués pour définir Adenauer. Son catholicisme explique son adhésion au Zentrum, parti catholique qui joua un rôle important sous la République de Weimar ; il est en 1945 l'un des fondateurs du Parti chrétien-démocrate, la CDU, une formation interconfessionnelle. Rhénan, Adenauer l'est profondément, ce qui l'amène à se méfier d'un pouvoir trop centralisé autour de Berlin. Maire de Cologne sous la République de Weimar, destitué par Hitler, il devient entre 1949 et 1963 le chancelier d'une République tronquée, la RFA, dont la capitale Bonn est proche de sa ville de naissance Cologne. Enfin, Adenauer engage résolument la RFA dans la construction européenne par anticommunisme et par pacifisme. Cet engagement lui vaut les réticences pour ne pas dire l'hostilité de ceux qui pensent que l'ancrage à l'Europe de l'Ouest signifie aussi la consécration de la division de l'Allemagne. Bien connu des Allemands, Adenauer souffre d'être étudié en France à travers le prisme de la politique française et du couple de Gaulle-Adenauer. Cette biographie tente d'apporter au lecteur français un éclairage plus équilibré.
