International Perspectives on Digital Media and Early Literacy evaluates the use and impact of digital devices for social interaction, language acquisition, and early literacy. It explores the role of interactive mediation as a tool for using digital media and provides empirical examples of best practice for digital media targeting language teaching and learning. The book brings together a range of international contributions and discusses the increasing trend of digitalization as an additional resource in early childhood literacy. It provides a broad insight into current research on the potential of digital media in inclusive settings by integrating multiple perspectives from different scientific fields: (psycho)linguistics, cognitive science, language didactics, developmental psychology, technology development, and human–machine interaction. Drawing on a large body of research, it shows that crucial early experiences in communication and social learning are the basis for later academic skills. The book is structured to display children’s first developmental steps in learning in interaction with digital media and highlight various domains of early digital media use in family, kindergarten, and primary schools. This book will appeal to practitioners, academics, researchers, and students with an interest in early education, literacy education, digital education, the sociology of digital culture and social interaction, school reform, and teacher education.

Praxeology As A Challenge written by Anna Herbert and has been published by Waxmann Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Education categories.

The question, 'how to do things with words?' (John L. Austin) could characterize the field of pedagogy in general, if not also practices, structural and material aspects had to be taken into account. The empirical question how social practices constitute a (binding) reality comes close to the praxeological perspective. On one side, 'praxeology' is a specific methodological approach to explore practices empirically. On the other side, it covers philosophical or sociological theories of action regarding sociality as generated by social practices and contextual structures. Practices are supposed to transmit, constitute and create ?establish e.g. social orders. The focus lies on corporal, performative and emergent aspects of the practices. All the mainly empirical studies in this volume deal with the praxeological question how sociality is generated in dynamic and relational actions in a pedagogical frame.

Performativity Materiality And Time written by Anja Kraus and has been published by Waxmann Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Education categories.

Focusing mainly on the tacit side of pedagogical practices entails not only a revision of instructional practices but also that of the existing theoretical approaches to educational practices and learning and a work on the methodology of empirical research in the Educational Sciences. In terms of this effort references to subjects, objects and given structures are replaced by the concepts performativity, materiality and time. In this volume the paradigm shift is applied to different educational fields, questions and methodologies, such as the performativity in imaginary, mediated and virtual spaces and other tacit subjects of learning, such as language education, the ethical implications of the adult-child differentiation, educational research on things and the mastery of university by the students.

Investing In Teacher Learning written by Richard F. Elmore and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with School improvement programs categories.

This paper describes how one New York City school district uses staff development to change instruction system-wide, discussing the role local school districts play in systemic school improvement and the role of professional development in connecting reform policy to classroom practice. The paper emphasizes the district's sustained attention to school improvement through professional development. The district's improvement strategy includes: (1) a set of organizing principles about the process of systemic change and the role of professional development in that process and (2) a set of specific activities that emphasize system-wide improvement of instruction. Its staff development has distinctively organized professional development models. Organizing principles include: focusing only on instruction; viewing instructional change as a long, multi-stage process; sharing expertise to drive instructional change; emphasizing system-wide improvement; working together to generate good ideas; setting clear expectations, then decentralizing; and promoting collegiality, caring, and respect. Specific professional development models include the professional development laboratory; instructional consulting services; inter-visitation and peer networks; off-site training; and oversight and principal site visits. This project's professional development is kept visible in the district budget, with the district committed to spending a specific proportion of the budget as an expression of the priority it places on professional development. The district uses multi-pocket budgeting to support this effort (orchestrating multiple sources of revenue around one priority to produce maximum revenue for that purpose). Four appendixes present sample agendas, schedules, and forms and a description of one program. (SM)

Higher education is increasingly recognized as crucial for the livelihoods of refugees and displaced populations caught in emergencies and protracted crises, to enable them to engage in contemporary, knowledge-based, global society. This book tells the story of the Borderless Higher Education for Refugees (BHER) project which delivers tuition-free university degree programs into two of the largest protracted refugee camps in the world, Dadaab and Kakuma in Kenya. Combining a human rights approaches, critical humanitarianism and a concern with gender relations and intersecting inequalities, the book proposes that higher education can provide refugees with the possibility of staying put or returning home with dignity. Written by academics based in Canada, Kenya, Somalia and the USA, as well as NGO workers and students from the camps, the book demonstrates how North-South and South-South collaborations are possible and indeed productive.

This book provides invaluable descriptions and comparative analyses of the now complex and highly varied arrangements for the care of children, disabled and older people in Europe, set within the context of changing labour markets and welfare systems. It includes analyses of the modernisation of informal care and new forms of informal care, topics often neglected in the literature. Issues of gender, family change, social integration and citizenship are all explored in a series of chapters that report on original empirical, cross-national research. All contributors are high-ranking experts involved in the COST A13 Action Programme, funded by the European Union. Care and social integration in European societies is essential reading for social policy and sociology academics, particularly those who are interested in comparative policy analysis, gender, labour markets and families. It is also recommended reading for graduate level students in these fields and policy makers, for whom the book provides a unique resource on the latest European developments in this critical policy area.

Migration And New Media written by Mirca Madianou and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-01 with Social Science categories.

How do parents and children care for each other when they are separated because of migration? The way in which transnational families maintain long-distance relationships has been revolutionised by the emergence of new media such as email, instant messaging, social networking sites, webcam and texting. A migrant mother can now call and text her left-behind children several times a day, peruse social networking sites and leave the webcam for 12 hours achieving a sense of co-presence. Drawing on a long-term ethnographic study of prolonged separation between migrant mothers and their children who remain in the Philippines, this book develops groundbreaking theory for understanding both new media and the nature of mediated relationships. It brings together the perspectives of both the mothers and children and shows how the very nature of family relationships is changing. New media, understood as an emerging environment of polymedia, have become integral to the way family relationships are enacted and experienced. The theory of polymedia extends beyond the poignant case study and is developed as a major contribution for understanding the interconnections between digital media and interpersonal relationships.
