Masterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2022 im Fachbereich Medien / Kommunikation - Film und Fernsehen, Note: 1,0, Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die vorliegende Schrift untersucht rhetorische und ästhetische Mittel, mit denen konspirative Dokumentarfilme sich um die Gunst des Publikums bemühen. Als Fallbeispiel dient die US-amerikanische Produktion "VaxXed, From Cover-Up to Catastrophe" (2016). Diese erhielt bereits vor ihrer geplanten Premiere auf dem Tribeca Film Festival breite internationale, mediale und vor allem kritische Aufmerksamkeit. Wie der Titel bereits vermuten lässt, handelt es sich hier um einen Film über Impfungen: In einer dokumentarischen Assemblage von weinenden Kindern in Homevideos, Audio-Aufnahmen eines Whistleblowers, herzzerreißenden Zeuginnenberichten von Eltern und ernsten Interviewaufnahmen von Ärztinnen und Expertinnen, wird eine holzschnittartige Darstellung der Welt präsentiert, in der die Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) die US-amerikanische Bevölkerung belügt. Robert de Niro – Hollywoodschauspieler und Mitbegründer des Tribeca Film Festivals, sowie Vater eines autistischen Sohns – hatte den Film persönlich für das Programm 2016 ausgesucht. Er wollte nach eigenen Aussagen mit der Aufführung des Filmes eine Konversation ermöglichen. Es folgten internationale Proteste von Wissenschaftlerinnen, Journalistinnen, Autismus-Organisationen und Dokumentarfilmerinnen. De Niro wurde vorgeworfen, den Film und seine Inhalte mit seinem Verhalten zu würdigen. Schließlich wurde der Film aus dem Programm genommen. Die Kontroversen und die ‘Zensur’ – wie Wakefield die Handhabung des Films bezeichnet– waren ein Glücksfall für eben jenen. Es wurde genau das Gegenteil des eigentlichen Zwecks erreicht: Die Folge waren ein großes mediales und gesellschaftliches Interesse und hohe Publikumszahlen. Der Film lief international in zahlreichen Kinos an, auch in Deutschland und Österreich – trotz oder gerade wegen der Kritik. Die Bekanntheit und Verbreitung sowie kritische Aufmerksamkeit, die dem ersten Film zuteil wurden, waren ausschlaggebend für meine Auswahl als Fallbeispiel.

As the question consists of two parts, the analysis will correspondingly be carried out in two steps. The first part will investigate if the viewer is enabled to morally justify Dexter’s behavior by positively identifying with him, and if this dynamic is supported and reinforced by stylistic devices such as framing and mise-en-scène. The second part will investigate Dexter’s “activities” on the basis of the two abovementioned ethical theories and apply these to a selection of scenes from various seasons of the series. Unlike the article from dexterdaily.com, which suggests that Dexter may be morally absolved by both utilitarianism and Kant’s ethical theory, a preliminary assumption of this thesis is that Dexter might be offered moral amnesty by utilitarianism, rather than by Kant.

In Futilitarianism, social and political theorist Neil Vallelly eloquently tells the story of how neoliberalism transformed the relationship between utility maximization and the common good.
