During the past 20 years the investigation into meaning of natural languages has emerged into one of the most active disciplines in theoretical linguistics. The different traditions of linguistics, philosophy of language and philosophical logic converged in the paradigm of truth conditional semantics, which now plays a central role in the cognitive sciences. From empirical research in particular languages more principal questions arise of how the speaker succeeds in expressing particular types of meaning by use of formal combination of signs. The theories developed to cope with the question assume that for a hearer, the meaning of a complex expression must be "computable", and therefore, modern theoretical semantics uses formal algebraic methods to construct the meaning compositionally in view of syntactic structur. Furthermore, meaning need to be "anchored" in the experience available to hearer. In order to deal with this, theoretical semantics extensivly uses the concept of truth conditions, which roughly explain how a world must be structured in order to be matched by certain linguistic expressions. Semantic analyses are complemented by context theory and the theory of speech acts. Thus, linguistic meaning must be related to human cognitive capacities, and therefore, theoretical semantics is tightly connected with philosophical logic as well as cognitive sciences in general. The aim of this handbook is to represent the body of theoretical knowledge which has evolved in the international research of the last two decades. Some of the theories can now be termed "classical" in that they belong to the commonly accepted base of theoretical semantics. Other theories are still disputed, and there areproblems still to be solved - as normal in a more developed science. The authors, who are leading experts in the field of semantics, try to balance the accepted and the questionable results. It goes without saying that each author hold a particular position in this respect. Some articles are written in English, some in German. Since semantics is considered to be a subfield of linguistics, the articles are arranged due to linguistic points of view. In the first 5 chapters (comprising 15 articles) the common principles of semantics are presented: ontological foundations of semantics, composition of meaning, problems of use (context, speech acts, and lexical base of meaning. The next 5 chapters (comprising 25 articles) are concerned with semantic phenomena, theories and problems which are specific for a particular class of linguistic expressions. These are arranged according to parts of speech: nouns, functional categories, verbs, adjectives and so on.This division does not reflect a theoretical position by itself, however it allows one to recognize problems connected with one another. Some more general questions are discussed in more than one article, in different perspective and vicinity. The Handbook is complemented by a service article on formal methods in semantics, followed by a comprehensive bibliography including about 1700 entries, and both a subject and a name index. This handbook is indispensable for all research in linguistics and neighboring disciplines (philosophy of language, cognitive sciences). Some of the articles can serve as basic literature for classes of advanced students.

Die Arbeit entwickelt ein gebrauchsbasiertes Modell zur Entstehung grammatischer Varianten. Dieses wird auf drei Variationsphänomene angewandt: Variation in der Konjugation (geglimmt/geglommen), Variation in der Deklination (des Bären/Bärs) und Variation in der Selektion zwischen haben und sein im Perfekt (ich bin/habe Auto gefahren). Zudem wird das Modell psycholinguistisch überprüft. Das Modell greift auf den gebrauchsbasierten Ansatz der Kognitionslinguistik zurück und erarbeitet Frequenz, Prototyp und Schema als grundlegende Einflussfaktoren darauf, wie wahrscheinlich Variation und Stabilität in einem Sprachsystem sind: Bei allen Variationsphänomenen sind neben der Variation auch stabile Verwendungen zu beobachten (geflogen/*gefliegt, des Matrosen/*des Matroses, ich bin gegangen/*ich habe gegangen). Im theoretischen Teil der Arbeit werden Frequenz, Protoyp und Schema als kognitive Einflussfaktoren auf Variation und Stabilität modelliert und anschließend ihr Einfluss auf die drei Variationsphänomene theoretisch beleuchtet. Im empirischen Teil der Arbeit wird der Einfluss der Faktoren Frequenz, Prototyp und Schema anhand von Reaktionszeitmessungen überprüft. Das in der Arbeit entwickelte Modell fasst Variation und Stabilität von Sprache probabilistisch und prognostiziert auf diese Weise Variation. Der Rückgriff auf Reaktionszeiten erlaubt es, in der Sprachverarbeitung Variationspotential zu erkennen, das noch nicht im Sprachgebrauch sichtbar ist. Die Arbeit verdeutlicht damit den zentralen Stellenwert, den Variation in der Sprache einnimmt, erweitert mit der Verbindung aus Kognitions- und Psycholinguistik bestehende Forschung und ermöglicht einen systematischen, empirisch überprüfbaren Zugang zu Variation.

Wie definiert er seine Rolle in der Geschichte? Die Debatten über „das Ende der Geschichte“, über den „Kampf der Kulturen“ und selbstverschuldeten Klimawandel, über die „neue Unübersichtlichkeit“, die Individualisierung und das Auseinanderdriften von gesellschaftlichen Sub- und Staatensystemen scheinen das Damoklesschwert über dem menschlichen Selbstbewusstsein schweben zu lassen. Wer will, findet ohne weiteres eine Vielzahl von Indizien, die den Schluss nahe legen, „wir“, also die Menschen, hätten den „göttlichen Auftrag“ einer vernünftigen Weltbemächtigung und –bestellung verfehlt oder zumindest noch nicht vollendet. Die Suche nach einem Ausweg aus dem Dilemma führt zu einem altbekannten Wettstreit, nämlich dem zwischen den konservativen und den nach Fortschritt eifernden Kräften. Die einen suchen in der Vergangenheit und in tradierten Vorstellungen nach Lösungen, die anderen glauben an einzigartige Herausforderungen, die nur mit neuen Entwürfen gemeistert werden können. Auch heute erhitzen derartig antagonistische Positionen, beispielsweise in Gestalt der Bestrebungen zur Reaktivierung der mittelalterliche Landwirtschaft („biologischer Landbau“) gegen die Umsetzung „fortschrittlichen“ Gen-Foods, die Gemüter und liefern den Stoff für nicht selten polemische Auseinandersetzungen. Muss es also weitergehen oder sollte es wie früher sein? Eine erschöpfende Antwort auf diese Frage wird wohl nicht möglich sein. Aber tatsächlich ist zu beobachten, dass in den meisten Abschnitten der Geschichte eines der beiden Topoi den Zeitgeist bestimmt hat. Das menschliche Selbstvertrauen – wie auch sein Selbstmisstrauen – wächst und schwindet im Einklang mit den Blüte- und Wartezeiten der Historie, wobei es insgesamt durch einen in der Vorstellungskraft zunehmend überblickbaren, zeitlichen Horizont eine größere Projektionsfläche bekommt. Damals wie heute wird mit solchen Projektionen – optimistischen wie pessimistischen Visionen – Politik gemacht, also mit gesellschaftlich vermittelten Ideen Gesellschaft geformt. Das vorherrschende Konzept von Zeitlichkeit ist im pragmatischen Ringen um Lösungen als (vielleicht) Voraussetzungsloses oft auch das nicht explizit Miteinbedachte. Es strukturiert das Denken und das Denkbare unbemerkt, stillschweigend, solange es nicht zum Gegenstand von Reflexionen wird (wobei auch diese durch eine vorgeschaltete Zeitkonzeption strukturiert sind). Vielleicht traut sich der Mensch umso mehr zu, je mehr er die Zeit zu beherrschen oder wenigstens zu verstehen glaubt. Als Zirkelkonstruktion, die als Selbstgeschaffenes das Schaffen strukturiert, um dann wiederum das Geschaffene zu verzeitlichen, hat sie jedenfalls einfache wie komplexe Antworten zum Problem „Werden und Vergehen“ inspiriert. Außerdem ist die Konzeption, welche der Mensch von Zeit hat, ein mächtiges – wenn nicht das mächtigste – Strukturmerkmal seiner individuellen wie auch sozialen Existenz. Der Letzteren widmet sich diese Arbeit.
