Der Mensch verbringt rund ein Drittel seines Lebens im Schlaf, was gegenwärtig bei einer durchschnittlichen Lebenszeit 27 Jahre in einer Sphäre des Unbewussten bedeutet. Die körperliche Erfahrung täglich schlafen zu müssen, war bereits im Alten Ägypten mit verschiedenen Assoziationen, Empfindungen und Metaphern verbunden. So wird der Schlaf nicht nur in alltäglichen Kontexten benannt und dargestellt, sondern spielt positiv, neutral oder negativ konnotiert in der Literatur, Mythologie, Heilkunde, Ethik, Religion und den Jenseitsvorstellungen eine wichtige Rolle. Ziel der Studie ist es, aus emischer Sicht die unterschiedlichen Verwendungs- und Darstellungskontexte aufzuzeigen und in einem zweiten Schritt die dahinterliegenden universellen und spezifischen Konzepte aufzudecken. Erstmals wird hierfür in einer kulturhistorischen Arbeit über das Schlafverhalten auch der Bereich der Müdigkeit berücksichtigt. Als Quellen dienen mehr als 1.000 schriftliche Belege aus einer Zeit zwischen 2800 bis 1070 v. Chr., die mit bildlichen und archäologischen Hinterlassenschaften abgeglichen werden. Kapitel zum Entstehen von Müdigkeit und Schlaf aus moderner medizinischer Sicht sowie zum Schlafverhalten weiterer außereuropäischer Kulturen runden die Studie ab. Die Lektüre dient nicht nur als Nachschlagewerk rund um den Schlaf im Alten Ägypten, sondern regt auch zum Nachdenken über das eigene Schlafverhalten an.

Vigilanz wird alltäglich ausgeübt, etwa im Bereich der Sicherheit, des Rechts, der Religionen oder auch der Öffentlichen Gesundheit: überall dort, wo wir auf etwas achten, gegebenenfalls auch etwas tun oder melden sollen. Der Münchner SFB 1369, in dem dieser Band entstanden ist, untersucht die Geschichte, kulturellen Varianten und aktuellen Formen dieses Phänomens nichtinstitutioneller, aber doch hochgradig funktionaler Wachsamkeit. Der erste Band der Publikationsreihe ‚Vigilanzkulturen‘ widmet sich der zeitlichen Dimension von Vigilanz. So wie menschliche Aufmerksamkeit erheblichen Schwankungen unterliegt, ist auch Wachsamkeit zeitlich instabil. Die hohe physiologisch-kognitive Intensität von Wachsamkeit lässt sich nur schwer auf Dauer stellen. Wird über längere Zeit hinweg ein ereignisloses oder unstrukturiertes Geschehen beobachtet, sinkt die Aufmerksamkeit oder richtet sich auf anderes. Kulturelle Anleitungen zur Wachsamkeit arbeiten daher in der Regel selbst mit zeitlichen Strukturen: mit Rhythmisierungen, Habitualisierungen oder Dramatisierungen. Sie geben vor, in welcher Abfolge Wachsamkeit herauf- oder herabgestuft werden soll oder sie variieren denkbare Gefahren. Sie arbeiten mit natürlichen Zeitverläufen (wie Tag und Nacht, Licht und Dunkelheit), die sie, kulturell überformt, nutzbar machen. Darüber hinaus können auch Techniken und Medien helfen, Wachsamkeit zu verstetigen. Der Band untersucht diese zeitliche Gestaltung der Wachsamkeit anhand historisch spezifischer Konstellationen. Er versammelt Beiträge aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen wie Geschichte, Ethnographie, Kunstgeschichte, Literatur- und Medienwissenschaft, um die Zeiten der Wachsamkeit zu erforschen.

Leitend ist dabei die Einsicht, dass die Welt des und der Schlafenden auf eine Welt der Wachenden angewiesen ist, um objektiv und subjektiv Verlässlichkeit zu gewährleisten. Wenn in den Texten der Bibel und ihrer Umwelt vom Schlaf die Rede ist, handelt es sich nicht um Definitionen, sondern Erfahrungen, Beobachtungen und Deutungen. Als Einsicht in das zeitweilige Ausgeliefertsein angesichts des eigenen Schlafs und des Schlafes anderer ist der Schlaf ein zutiefst soziales Thema. Zudem strukturiert der Schlaf als auf mehrere Etappen verteiltes Geschehen die Nacht, was zum einen die Erfahrung von Finsternis und durchwachter Stunden intensiviert, zum anderen den Blick freilegt auf die Nacht- und Bettkultur. Damit erschliesst der Schlaf einen wichtigen Teil des Lebens und der Zeit bzw. Umstände, in denen er sich vollzieht.

This is the first volume of the final reports of the Mission of the K.U.Leuven in Dayr al-Barsha (Middle Egypt). It contains the publication (in colour photographs and line drawings in colour) of three small tombs probably dated immediately after the Unification of Egypt in the reign of pharaoh Mentuhotep II (XIth Dynasty). After an introduction on the long-term research strategy of the Dayr al-Barsha project it first offers an account of the setting of the tombs and of earlier research carried out there. This is followed by a detailed account of each of the three monuments, including a detailed philological commentary of the texts. These include two autobiographical inscriptions, of which one has received little attention, while the other is here published in full for the first time. The scant archaeological remains found in the tombs are also dealt with in detail. The two tombs are contemporary with that of the nomarch Ahanakht I, and offers a rare insight into the functioning of a nomarchal court in the early Middle Kingdom. The last chapter offers an analysis of this, and also advances a hypothesis on the way king Mentuhotep succeeded in integrating the Middle Egyptian provincial elites into the newly united kingdom.
