Eliotin runotuotanto puhuttelee lukijaa maailmassa, jossa ihmisen osa on kamppailla syvien ristiriitojen ja vaikeiden tunteiden kanssa. Tuntojaan Eliot ilmaisee kielellä, joka on terävää, humoristista, erehtymättömän osuvaa ja unohtumatonta. Hänen vaikutuksensa runouteen ja ajatteluun ulottui ja ulottuu yhä ympäri maailman; Suomessakin tiedetään, että huhtikuu on kuukausista julmin. Eliotin runoudessa 1900-luvun raskaat vaiheet kokenut lukija tunnisti oman äänensä. Koottujen runojen käännöksestä ja selityksistä vastaa Eliotiin perehtynyt, Neljän kvarteton suomennoksen v. 2007 julkaissut Juha Silvo. Thomas Stearns Eliot (1888–1965) syntyi Yhdysvaltain itärannikolla, muutti Lontooseen ja teki kirjallisen läpimurtonsa ensimmäisen maailmansodan jälkeen. Modernistinen voittokulku tuotti joukon vuosisadan tunnetuimpia runoteoksia. Aution maan ja Neljän kvarteton tekijälle myönnettiin Nobelin kirjallisuuspalkinto v. 1948. Eliot oli myös kustantaja ja aikansa johtava kirjallisuuskriitikko, jonka vaikutus yltää meidänkin aikaamme.

Versification describes the marriage of language and poetic form through which poetry is produced.
