More than five hundred characters are targeted in exercises that aid in the efficient study of the forms, meanings, and sounds of individual characters and their compounds. Although the primary goal of the Reader is recognition of basic Chinese characters, students are encouraged to learn to write them properly by inclusion of a section on stroke order. The Reader is also designed to reinforce skills in reading and writing in Korean while studying Chinese characters. Forty lessons are preceded by an introductory chapter on the principles of Chinese character formation and reading and writing characters and followed by appendices on stroke order, English translations of the main reading text of each lesson, and an index of characters. The lessons are organized into seven parts: new characters, reading text, glossary, notes, new words in characters, more words in characters, and exercises. After every fifth lesson, there is a section reviewing all the characters introduced in the preceding five lessons.

Korea in Turbulent Years, And The Man Who Wrote Front Page Stories When South Korea was going through its turbulent years, one journalist stood out more than any other; his name was Kim Young-Su. He made stops at three most representative newspaper companies in Korea, collectively so-called Cho-Joong-Dong, before he became a report bureau chief of MBC where he reported on the most fluctuating times in the modern history of Korea. [Korean Journalist] resonated with readers who were curious about what happened behind the scenes throughout modern times of Korea. The Events Were His Life! Korea’s Modern History through the Eyes of a Journalist [Korean Journalist] is filled with vivid recounts of memorable events that marked modern history, inviting readers to observe the past through the eyes of the experienced journalist. Transcending time and space, his stories will engage readers in the past events from Presidents Rhee Syngman to Park Chung-hee, and from Defense Security Command to Panmunjeom to Vietnam. MBC's exclusive coverage of the assassination of the First Lady Yuk Young-Su, in particular, captured such a breathtaking moment that still echoes down to this day. "Did Kim Young-Su say 'Yes'? If he is in, I am in." - An Inspirational Life Story of a Journalist When the newly established Joongang Daily was seeking to bring in new journalists, the first question to be asked was this: "Did Kim Young-Su say 'Yes'? If he is in, I am in." Around that time, people could recognize his news articles simply by the first letter of his name, Young, appearing on the page. Most importantly, along with his faithful nature and good-fellowship, his undying spirit in which he held up a recorder even in the face of death makes him a role model and inspiration to every journalist of our time.

Over the past decade, Korean popular culture has become a global phenomenon. The "Korean Wave" of music, film, television, sports, and cuisine generates significant revenues and cultural pride in South Korea. The Korean Popular Culture Reader provides a timely and essential foundation for the study of "K-pop," relating the contemporary cultural landscape to its historical roots. The essays in this collection reveal the intimate connections of Korean popular culture, or hallyu, to the peninsula's colonial and postcolonial histories, to the nationalist projects of the military dictatorship, and to the neoliberalism of twenty-first-century South Korea. Combining translations of seminal essays by Korean scholars on topics ranging from sports to colonial-era serial fiction with new work by scholars based in fields including literary studies, film and media studies, ethnomusicology, and art history, this collection expertly navigates the social and political dynamics that have shaped Korean cultural production over the past century. Heart Of The Century written by Tom Mueller and has been published by Dog Ear Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10 with History categories.

The years 1949, 1950 and 1951 were a highly perilous time that can take a justified place among the toughest of the 20th Century. Author Tom Mueller recounts the stories of those years, gathered from more than 170 front pages of newspapers in 12 states. He explores the lives of six men who died in Korea and interviews 15 who fought there, some of whom were wounded. One survived only because the shrapnel hit the prayer book that he kept over his heart. The book also tells dozens of smaller stories: A new elephant was arriving in Madison, Wis.; newspapers were reporting the status of agricultural crops and running photos of local beauty queens; and a national radio show was reading sentimental poems. Tom Mueller's previous two books were about men and women in World War II. Now he focuses on the Korean War and the multiple other political and economic tensions of the period, plus many facets of daily life in the exact middle of the century. If you are a Baby Boomer, you will marvel after reading this book how close the world came to a Third World War. You also will be entertained by some of the local stories in the newspapers. Mueller has been writing about wars and soldiers and other historic events for more than 25 years, first for his newspaper and now in his own books.
