Penulusuran kembali soal sejarah komunitas Arab beserta eksistensinya di kota Yogyakarta menggugah penulis untuk mengkaji lebih dalam. Kenapa keberadaan komunitas ini seperti tidak terlihat? Atau sedikit sekali kajian-kajian tentang komunitas ini, tidak seperti komunitas-komunitas Arab yang banyak menjadi objek kajian seperti di kota Surakarta, Jakarta, Surabaya, dll. Kajian etnis Arab sebagai komunitas yang tidak pernah diperhitungkan dalam populasi masyarakat Yogyakarta. Melihat fenomena perkembangan komunitas keturunan Arab di Yogyakarta saat ini, tidak dapat dilepaskan dari realitas eksistensi-historis kaum Hadrami sebelumnya. Penelusuran tentang kronologi kedatangan dan proses interaksi mereka dengan masyarakat Yogyakarta merupakan teori yang harus dipecahkan lebih dulu sebelum menafsirkan kondisi dan situasi yang berlaku selanjutnya. Adapun pencitraan masyarakat terhadap golongan Arab memiliki andil besar untuk memudahkan akses masuk golongan itu ke berbagai kalangan di Yogyakarta, khususnya kalangan bangsawan kraton. Namun, bagi mereka yang telah berada di lingkungan tersebut harus memenuhi beberapa persyaratan yang membuat “hilangnya” identitas kearaban mereka.

In The Appearances of Memory, the Indonesian architectural and urban historian Abidin Kusno explores the connections between the built environment and political consciousness in Indonesia during the colonial and postcolonial eras. Focusing primarily on Jakarta, he describes how perceptions of the past, anxieties about the rapid pace of change in the present, and hopes for the future have been embodied in architecture and urban space at different historical moments. He argues that the built environment serves as a reminder of the practices of the past and an instantiation of the desire to remake oneself within, as well as beyond, one’s particular time and place. Addressing developments in Indonesia since the fall of President Suharto’s regime in 1998, Kusno delves into such topics as the domestication of traumatic violence and the restoration of order in the urban space, the intense interest in urban history in contemporary Indonesia, and the implications of “superblocks,” large urban complexes consisting of residences, offices, shops, and entertainment venues. Moving farther back in time, he examines how Indonesian architects reinvented colonial architectural styles to challenge the political culture of the state, how colonial structures such as railway and commercial buildings created a new, politically charged cognitive map of cities in Java in the early twentieth century, and how the Dutch, in attempting to quell dissent, imposed a distinctive urban visual order in the 1930s. Finally, the present and the past meet in his long-term considerations of how Java has responded to the global flow of Islamic architecture, and how the meanings of Indonesian gatehouses have changed and persisted over time. The Appearances of Memory is a pioneering look at the roles of architecture and urban development in Indonesia’s ongoing efforts to move forward.

Faith and the State offers a comprehensive historical development of Islamic philanthropy--zakat (almsgiving), sedekah (donation) and waqf (religious endowment)-- from the time of the Islamic monarchs, through the period of Dutch colonialism and up to contemporary Indonesia. It shows a rivalry between faith and the state: between efforts to involve the state in managing philanthropic activities and efforts to keep them under control of Muslim civil society. Philanthropy is an indication of the strength of civil society. When the state was weak, philanthropy developed powerfully and was used to challenge the state. When the state was strong, Muslim civil society tended to weaken but still found ways to use philanthropic practices in the public sphere to promote social change.

Politik puisi sufi berposisi dan berhadapan dengan wacana nondiskursif, terutama wacana diskursif seperti Pancasila, ataupun wacana-wacana yang diadopsi sebagai akibat terjadinya globalisasi, seperti wacana pembangunan (ekonomi), modernisme (sekularisme), demokrasi, dan pluralisme. Hal itu dilakukan negara untuk menjaga kemapanan ordernya. Aparat-aparat ideologis yang dimanfaatkan oleh negara ialah situs-situs pendidikan, media massa, partai politik, dan kelompok-kelompok kepentingan yang diinstitusikan oleh negara. Wacana politik kekuasaan Orde Baru, yang dianggap berbau sekuler dan/atau kejawen itu, berpretensi menyingkirkan peran Islam dalam peta sosial ataupun politik. Kondisi itu didukung oleh wacana politik Islam yang tekstual/skriptural yang kaku sehingga menyebabkan Islam dalam formasi sosial itu semakin terpojok dalam ruang eksklusivistik. Berangkat dari ketersingkiran secara sosial dan politik tersebut, sejumlah pemikir muda melahirkan apa yang disebut sebagai gerakan atau wacana Islam substantif/kultural. Wacana ini ternyata lebih dapat diterima oleh kekuasaan Orde Baru, dan juga merebut perhatian para penyair generasi santri-baru karena wacana Islam kultural memiliki kesamaan tertentu dengan sufisme, atau lebih tepatnya neosufisme inklusif.
