Politik puisi sufi berposisi dan berhadapan dengan wacana nondiskursif, terutama wacana diskursif seperti Pancasila, ataupun wacana-wacana yang diadopsi sebagai akibat terjadinya globalisasi, seperti wacana pembangunan (ekonomi), modernisme (sekularisme), demokrasi, dan pluralisme. Hal itu dilakukan negara untuk menjaga kemapanan ordernya. Aparat-aparat ideologis yang dimanfaatkan oleh negara ialah situs-situs pendidikan, media massa, partai politik, dan kelompok-kelompok kepentingan yang diinstitusikan oleh negara. Wacana politik kekuasaan Orde Baru, yang dianggap berbau sekuler dan/atau kejawen itu, berpretensi menyingkirkan peran Islam dalam peta sosial ataupun politik. Kondisi itu didukung oleh wacana politik Islam yang tekstual/skriptural yang kaku sehingga menyebabkan Islam dalam formasi sosial itu semakin terpojok dalam ruang eksklusivistik. Berangkat dari ketersingkiran secara sosial dan politik tersebut, sejumlah pemikir muda melahirkan apa yang disebut sebagai gerakan atau wacana Islam substantif/kultural. Wacana ini ternyata lebih dapat diterima oleh kekuasaan Orde Baru, dan juga merebut perhatian para penyair generasi santri-baru karena wacana Islam kultural memiliki kesamaan tertentu dengan sufisme, atau lebih tepatnya neosufisme inklusif.

Terdapat suatu kecenderungan umum yang berkembang dalam masyarakat, yakni ketika sastra diposisikan sebagai fenomena yang hanya berhubungan dengan dunia khayalan. Paling dekat adalah pekerjaan orang-orang iseng untuk sekedar mengisi waktu dan secara signifikan tidak berkaitan dengan riuh rendah persoalan-persoalan bangsa yang sedang sibuk membangun. Mungkin juga hanya berharga sebagai pilihan terakhir mencari hiburan eksklusif, untuk memberi kesan, dan upaya legitimasi, bahwa sebetulnya kita merupakan bangsa yang beradab. Situasi paradigmatik tersebut secara keseluruhan berpengaruh terhadap kebijakan yang diambil oleh negara dan masyarakat, baik pada tingkat politik ekonomi pendidikan nasional dalam menempatkan kesusastraan, maupun, sebagai implikasinya, yang tercermin pada aspek-aspek teoretis dan pragmatis dalam kurikulum pendidikan dan buku-buku teks pelajaran tentang kesusastraan. Situasi tersebut hingga kini sebagian besar masih cukup terpelihara sehingga tidak perlu terlalu berharap berkembangnya penghormatan yang sama terhadap sastra dibanding yang nonsastra. Akan tetapi, di pihak lain, terdapat situasi-situasi berbeda yang juga berkembang yang menuntut dan menempatkan karya sastra berperan lebih penting dalam proses-proses sosial, politik, dan kebudayaan. Khususnya pada akhir dekade 1980-an, secara teoretis upaya-upaya tersebut semakin berpengaruh dan lambat laun mulai mendapat dukungan yang cukup luas. Kajian dalam buku ini, katakanlah begitu, merupakan salah satu upaya analisis dan signifikansi terhadap karya sastra untuk ikut mendukung kecenderungan tersebut. Seperti diketahui, pada tahun 1980-an hingga 1990-an, di Yogyakarta khususnya, terjadi perebakan, atau mungkin semacam kebangkitan puisi sufi. Pertanyaan yang paling mendasar adalah mengapa dan ada apa dalam puisi sufi, kenapa tidak jenis puisi yang lain yang dipilih para penyair sebagai sarana mengekspresikan gagasannya. Perebakan dan kebangkitan tersebut tentu bukan sesuatu yang berdiri sendiri, apalagi jika dilihat bahwa pada waktu itu rezim Orde Baru berada dalam masa puncak kekuasannya.

The Scope of the Work The main purpose of this work is to give a critical edition of a Javanese text - the Serat Cabolek - together with an Introduction, an English trans lation of the text, and Notes. The present publication is a slighdy revised version of a doctoral dissertation submitted to the Australian National Univer sity in 1967. The Introduction to the text begins with a brief description of each of the extant MSS of the Serat Cabolek to be found in the Manuscript Sections of the Jakarta Museum Library and the Lembaga Kebudayaan Indonesia and in the Griental Manuscripts Section of the Leiden University Library. In addition, a description is given of a printed version of the Serat Cabolek. The eleven MSS and the printed text are compared with one another on the points of form, structure and content, in order to discover their mutual relationship. From this comparison it becomes clear that no matter how much these eleven MSS and the printed text of theSerat Cabolek may differ the one from the other, they all share a common core and all ultimately derive from a single source. The kernel of the Serat Cabolek in all probability comprised only the following sections: (1) the story dealing with the trial of Haji Mutamakin by the Kartasura tribunal; (2) the teaching of Dewa Ruci to Bhima; and (3) a commentary on Dewa Ruds counsel to Bhima.
