Renessanssin aikakaudesta lähtienkirkon innoittamana kolonialismilla kristinusko on laajentunut kaikkialle maailmaan.

Martin Luther and Buddhism: Aesthetics of Suffering carefully traces the historical and theological context of Luther's breakthrough in terms of articulating justification and justice in connection to the Word of God and divine suffering. Chung critically and constructively engages in dialogue with Luther and with later interpreters of Luther such as Barth and Moltmann, placing the Reformer in dialogue not only with Asian spirituality and religions but also with emerging global theology of religions.

Mission Church And State Relations In South West Africa Under German Rule 1884 1915 written by Nils Ole Oermann and has been published by Franz Steiner Verlag Wiesbaden gmbh this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with History categories.

The study examines the interaction of missionaries and clergymen with the colonial administration in South West Africa/Namibia under German rule (1884-1915). It seeks to put forward a new, more specific picture of members of religious societies often characterised as "advocates of the natives" or "collaborators of the colonial state". On the basis of detailed archival research of German, Namibian, Finnish, South African and English archival sources the study aims at providing sufficient evidence for the argument that it is not only misleading, but historically incorrect to characterise mission, church and state relations in a colonial society by general terms such as "collaboration" or "opposition", arguing against the assumption that the groups involved had homogeneous social and political structures. "...this is a well-researched and judicious piece of scholarship which will be of lasting value as a guide to the organization of religious life under German colonialism.o The International History Review "Oermann provides an intense and disturbing insight into German colonial society. [a] this is a satisfying book to read, which has been written by somebody who kept an open mind, worked hard and truly knew his material." Journal of African History "Ohne Abstriche ist Oermanns Versuch, unter Aufnahme prosopographischer Fragestellungen das Bild eines homogenen Missionarskollektivs zu dekonstruieren, als gelungen zu bezeichnen. Man kann ihm nur viele Nachahmer sowohl fur andere Missionsgesellschaften als auch fur die Gruppe der Siedler oder der Kolonialbeamten wunschen." Das Historisch-Politische Buch . Things travel around the globe: they are shipped as mass consumer goods, or transported as souvenirs or gifts. There are infinite ways for things to be mobile, not only in the era of globalisation but since the beginning of time, as the earliest traces of long distance trading show. This book investigates the mobility of things from archaeological and anthropological perspectives. Material Objects are characterised by temporal continuity, embodying a prior existence with lingering effects. Yet the material continuity disguises the transformations they may undergo, which only become evident upon closer examination. Objects are in perpetual flux, leaving visible traces of their age, usage, and previous life. While travelling through time, objects also circulate through space, and their spatial mobility alters their meaning and use with respect to new cultural horizons. As objects transform through time and space, so does the value attributed to them. Mapping out itineraries of value in the realm of the material, allows us to grasp the nature of a given social formation through the shape and meaning taken on by its valued 'stuff'. It also provides insights into the nature of materiality, through the value ascribed to objects at a given point in time and space. This edited volume brings together studies of material culture, materiality and value, with regard to the mobility of objects, with the aim of tracing the ways in which societies constitute their valued objects and how the realm of the material reflects upon society.

The Jewish Enlightenment written by Shmuel Feiner and has been published by University of Pennsylvania Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-08-17 with History categories.

At the beginning of the eighteenth century most European Jews lived in restricted settlements and urban ghettos, isolated from the surrounding dominant Christian cultures not only by law but also by language, custom, and dress. By the end of the century urban, upwardly mobile Jews had shaved their beards and abandoned Yiddish in favor of the languages of the countries in which they lived. They began to participate in secular culture and they embraced rationalism and non-Jewish education as supplements to traditional Talmudic studies. The full participation of Jews in modern Europe and America would be unthinkable without the intellectual and social revolution that was the Haskalah, or Jewish Enlightenment. Unparalleled in scale and comprehensiveness, The Jewish Enlightenment reconstructs the intellectual and social revolution of the Haskalah as it gradually gathered momentum throughout the eighteenth century. Relying on a huge range of previously unexplored sources, Shmuel Feiner fully views the Haskalah as the Jewish version of the European Enlightenment and, as such, a movement that cannot be isolated from broader eighteenth-century European traditions. Critically, he views the Haskalah as a truly European phenomenon and not one simply centered in Germany. He also shows how the republic of letters in European Jewry provided an avenue of secularization for Jewish society and culture, sowing the seeds of Jewish liberalism and modern ideology and sparking the Orthodox counterreaction that culminated in a clash of cultures within the Jewish community. The Haskalah's confrontations with its opponents within Jewry constitute one of the most fascinating chapters in the history of the dramatic and traumatic encounter between the Jews and modernity. The Haskalah is one of the central topics in modern Jewish historiography. With its scope, erudition, and new analysis, The Jewish Enlightenment now provides the most comprehensive treatment of this major cultural movement.
