This special issue of the journal “zeitgeschichte” presents the results of the doctoral theses written within the framework of the “Doctoral College European Historical Dictatorship and Transformation Research” (2009–2012) as selected scholarly essays. The contributions are devoted to authoritarian regimes of the 20th century in Austria, Belarus, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, and the Soviet Union. Revisiting the Past in Museums and at Historic Sites demonstrates that museums and historic spaces are increasingly becoming "backdrops" for all sorts of appropriations and interventions that throw new light upon the objects they comprise and the pasts they reference. Rooted in new scholarship that expands established notions of art installations, museums, period rooms, and historic sites, the book brings together contributions from scholars from intersecting disciplines. Arguing that we are witnessing a paradigm shift concerning the place of historic spaces and museums in the contemporary imaginary, the volume shows that such institutions are merging traditional scholarly activities tied to historical representation and inquiry with novel modes of display and interpretation, drawing them closer to the world of entertainment and interactive consumption. Case studies analyze how a range of interventions impact historic spaces and conceptions of the past they generate. Über 65 Tage wurden im wieder aufgebauten Museum Fridericianum zahlreiche Exponate der Malerei, Grafik, Skulptur und Architekturfotografie von 148 Künstler*innen der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert. Über 134.000 Besucher*innen sahen eine Ausstellung, die als solitäre Veranstaltung (mit Filmprogramm) zeitgleich zur Bundesgartenschau realisiert wurde und sich bis heute alle fünf Jahre mit einem sich verändernden Konzept zeigt. Das vorliegende wissenschaftliche Lesebuch zur documenta 1955 versammelt zentrale zeitgenössische Texte und Archivalien, die grundlegende Informationen und Einschätzungen der Weltkunstausstellung liefern. Darüber hinaus haben die Herausgeber die zentralen Denkfelder zur damaligen Ausstellung abgesteckt und mit aussagekräftigen Texten der Sekundärliteratur verschiedener Disziplinen versehen. Der Band strebt nach größtmöglicher Diversität in der allgemeinen Betrachtung wie der detaillierten Sichtung der documenta 1955.

Der Begriff ‚Szenografie’ hat in nicht wenigen Disziplinen seine Heimstatt gefunden: Architektur, Bühne, Kunst, Design, Kuration, Landschafts- wie Stadtplanung und Kunstwissenschaft sind nur einige der Fachrichtungen, die ‚Szenografie‘ als Bezeichnung raumbezogener ästhetischer Phänomene in ihr Vokabular aufgenommen haben. Es hat sich ein Fachdiskurs zum Szenografischen entwickelt, bei dem nicht selten eine rhetorische Eigenlogik, eine argumentative Dynamik und ein interdisziplinärer Begriffstransfer zu beobachten ist. Mutmaßlich wird hier ein Handlungsbedarf indiziert: Es gilt offenbar, eine universale Gestaltungsaufgabe begrifflich wie inhaltlich zu erschließen. Aus historischer Sicht tritt die Szenografie zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts an die Seite des Ausstellungsdesigns, wobei Architektur, Bühne, Kunst und Wissenschaft Pate gestanden haben. Aus kunstwissenschaftlicher Perspektive ist es die Moderne, d. h. der geistes-, sozial- und politikgeschichtliche Zeitraum seit dem 18. Jahrhundert, die vornehmlich in den Blick genommen wird. In dieser Zeitspanne findet das Szenografische seine intensivste formale wie konzeptuelle Ausprägung, eingedenk offensichtlicher Vorgänger in den vorausgehenden Jahrhunderten. Die nachweisliche universale Einsatzfähigkeit dieser Gestaltungsrichtung und die Vielfalt seiner Erscheinungsweise legt es mehr als nur nahe, eine transdisziplinäre Sichtung vorzunehmen. Die vorliegende Publikation folgt diesem Grundgedanken, indem die Auswahl von Quellentexten nicht bei der Beschreibung von kuratorischen Szenografien in Museen, Kunstsammlungen oder Pendantsystemen belassen wird, sondern eröffnet eine mehr kulturgeschichtliche Perspektive, die die Konkurrenzmedien wie Panorama, Passage, Warenhaus oder Messe einbezieht. Auch Reisebeschreibungen von Kulturstätten oder Urbanitäten finden Eingang in die Publikation, um das Augenmerk der Forschung auf den literarischen Aspekt der Szenografie zu lenken. So reicht die Spanne der Texte von der reinen Inventur über eine erste wertende Sichtung bis zur analysierenden Interpretation, die die reale Szenerie als Symptom einer allgemeinen Entwicklung betrachtet.

2024 marks the 250th anniversary of Caspar David Friedrich’s birth. His international fame was determined to a great extent by three major retrospective exhibitions, held in London, Hamburg and Dresden in the 1970s. This book examines their role for the artist’s reception and for the shaping of ‘Romanticism’ as a cultural concept, as well as describing them within the broader political contexts of their time. In addition, it presents archive material that has received little or no attention within the existing research on Friedrich and his artistic œuvre. The book argues that exhibitions – being shaped by complex negotiation processes – are a medium that should be included in a critical history of knowledge.
