Krukel wordt als pasgeboren eekhoorntje gevonden op het eiland Mistmantel. Over deze baby was voorspeld dat hij een machtig heerser ten val zal brengen; Krukel zelf is echter ontwetend. Op het eiland wonen diverse dieren vreedzaam samen onder leiding van een egelkoning. Als de zoon van de koning wordt vermoord, neemt kapitein Bast langzaamaan met harde regels de macht over. Krukel en verschillende andere dieren van het eiland komen in opstand. Dit dierenfantasieverhaal is bijzonder poetisch verteld. Diverse klassieke thema's zoals de strijd tussen goed en kwaad komen aan de orde. Het is spannend en dramatisch, en vergelijkbaar met 'Waterschapsheuvel' en 'Wind in de wilgen'. De Engelse docent drama schreef verschillende korte verhalen en een aantal boeken. Dit is het eerste boek dat in het Nederlands is vertaald; het is het eerst afgeronde deel van een trilogie bestemd voor kinderen vanaf ca. 10 jaar die houden van een spannend dierensprookje.
