Thomas S. Kuhn's 'The Structure of Scientific Revolutions' was a watershed event when it was published in 1962, upending the previous understanding of science as a slow, logical accumulation of facts and introducing, with the concept of the 'paradigm shift,' social and psychological considerations into the heart of the scientific process. The essays in this book exhume important historical context for Kuhn's work, critically analyzing its foundations in twentieth-century science, politics and Kuhn's own intellectual biography.

Thomas S. Kuhn’s The Structure of Scientific Revolutions was a watershed event when it was published in 1962, upending the previous understanding of science as a slow, logical accumulation of facts and introducing, with the concept of the “paradigm shift,” social and psychological considerations into the heart of the scientific process. More than fifty years after its publication, Kuhn’s work continues to influence thinkers in a wide range of fields, including scientists, historians, and sociologists. It is clear that The Structure of Scientific Revolutions itself marks no less of a paradigm shift than those it describes. In Kuhn’s “Structure of Scientific Revolutions” at Fifty, leading social scientists and philosophers explore the origins of Kuhn’s masterwork and its legacy fifty years on. These essays exhume important historical context for Kuhn’s work, critically analyzing its foundations in twentieth-century science, politics, and Kuhn’s own intellectual biography: his experiences as a physics graduate student, his close relationship with psychologists before and after the publication of Structure, and the Cold War framework of terms such as “world view” and “paradigm.”

A good book may have the power to change the way we see the world, but a great book actually becomes part of our daily consciousness, pervading our thinking to the point that we take it for granted, and we forget how provocative and challenging its ideas once were—and still are. The Structure of Scientific Revolutions is that kind of book. When it was first published in 1962, it was a landmark event in the history and philosophy of science. Fifty years later, it still has many lessons to teach. With The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, Kuhn challenged long-standing linear notions of scientific progress, arguing that transformative ideas don’t arise from the day-to-day, gradual process of experimentation and data accumulation but that the revolutions in science, those breakthrough moments that disrupt accepted thinking and offer unanticipated ideas, occur outside of “normal science,” as he called it. Though Kuhn was writing when physics ruled the sciences, his ideas on how scientific revolutions bring order to the anomalies that amass over time in research experiments are still instructive in our biotech age. This new edition of Kuhn’s essential work in the history of science includes an insightful introduction by Ian Hacking, which clarifies terms popularized by Kuhn, including paradigm and incommensurability, and applies Kuhn’s ideas to the science of today. Usefully keyed to the separate sections of the book, Hacking’s introduction provides important background information as well as a contemporary context. Newly designed, with an expanded index, this edition will be eagerly welcomed by the next generation of readers seeking to understand the history of our perspectives on science.

In 1962, the publication of Thomas Kuhn’s Structure ‘revolutionized’ the way one conducts philosophical and historical studies of science. Through the introduction of both memorable and controversial notions, such as paradigms, scientific revolutions, and incommensurability, Kuhn argued against the traditionally accepted notion of scientific change as a progression towards the truth about nature, and instead substituted the idea that science is a puzzle solving activity, operating under paradigms, which become discarded after it fails to respond accordingly to anomalous challenges and a rival paradigm. Kuhn’s Structure has sold over 1.4 million copies and the Times Literary Supplement named it one of the “Hundred Most Influential Books since the Second World War.” Now, fifty years after this groundbreaking work was published, this volume offers a timely reappraisal of the legacy of Kuhn’s book and an investigation into what Structure offers philosophical, historical, and sociological studies of science in the future.

Thomas Kuhn written by Juan V. Mayoral and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-09-22 with Science categories.
This new biography of Thomas S. Kuhn pays attention to the continuous development of his ideas. Mayoral provides a comprehensive overview of Kuhn's life and work. The book explores how Kuhn’s theory develops from its beginnings at Harvard University in the early 1950s through the early 1990s at the MIT and also describes Kuhn's parallel lifetime. Between those decades (1950s and 1990s), Kuhn went through different academic institutions, obtained a high status as a public intellectual, and shifted from the history of science to the philosophy of science (and back) as his main research target. All of this left a trace in his philosophical view of science, enriching and changing it since his early training as a theoretical physicist. In this book, Kuhn is considered as an intellectual in evolution, and his contributions are assessed against the backdrop of the different contexts that he traversed. Therefore, there shall not be a static figure of this intellectual, as there shall not be a static figure of the surrounding intellectual contexts, either. At the same time, however, this book is planned so that each chapter provides the reader with a picture of a significant period in Kuhn’s development and the main ideas that can be observed in it. The book is useful for upper undergraduates in philosophy, especially in philosophy of science, in general history and history of science, in the social sciences and other fields of humanities, and for scientifically trained individuals interested in this author. Kuhn scholars shall find this book useful for their studies on Kuhn insofar as new unpublished documents are employed, new facts about Kuhn’s life are provided, and a full interpretation of Kuhn’s evolving system of philosophy of science is built and discussed.

More than 50 years after the publication of Thomas Kuhn’s seminal book, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, this volume assesses the adequacy of the Kuhnian model in explaining certain aspects of science, particularly the social and epistemic aspects of science. One argument put forward is that there are no good reasons to accept Kuhn’s incommensurability thesis, according to which scientific revolutions involve the replacement of theories with conceptually incompatible ones. Perhaps, therefore, it is time for another “decisive transformation in the image of science by which we are now possessed.” Only this time, the image of science that needs to be transformed is the Kuhnian one. Does the Kuhnian image of science provide an adequate model of scientific practice? If we abandon the Kuhnian picture of revolutionary change and incommensurability, what consequences would follow from that vis-à-vis our understanding of scientific knowledge as a social endeavour? The essays in this collection continue this debate, offering a critical examination of the arguments for and against the Kuhnian image of science as well as their implications for our understanding of science as a social and epistemic enterprise.

A Science Theology Rapprochement written by Cyril Orji and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-12 with Religion categories.
This timely and fascinating work addresses questions of ultimate concerns for Christian believers by clarifying what religious believers’ statement “God creates” means in relation to the mechanistic determinism of science enthusiasts and the New Atheist Movement. Drawing from the methodological works of C.S. Peirce, Bernard Lonergan, and Wolfhart Pannenberg, the book creatively shows how the old science-theology conflict, or “warfare”, can be turned into one of collaboration or rapprochement. Using the works of these three thinkers, it departs from the common practice of treating the field of science-theology as an abstract mainstream theology. The book takes a stand on contextual theology, treating the problem posed by Richard Dawkins and his fellow New Atheists as one in need of a creative solution. It also suggests that the dialogue between science and theology must take seriously the experiences and challenges from different social and cultural contexts. The text shows how these experiences can lead to the kind of creative theological thinking we see in the works of Pannenberg and Lonergan, who both explicate, not only how an understanding of an evolutionary universe is compatible with the Christian doctrine of creation, but also how a methodological comparison of science and theology reveals a common concern for human understanding and openness to divine agency.

The author presents a new philosophy of science in the grand tradition that has recently been deemed impossible. Scerri believes that science develops as a holistic entity, which is fundamentally unified even though the individuals making up the body scientific are frequently in competition among each other. He draws inspiration from a conviction that the world is essentially unified in the way that has been described by both Western and Eastern philosophers. --

Can genocide and terrorism ever be eliminated? This book says yes. It demonstrates that such atrocities are driven mainly by mass ideological hate incitement. Hence ending the violence requires shutting down the incitement – especially across the Middle East, where a tsunami of hate propaganda drives an epidemic of terrorism.
