Es schien auch Hoffnung vorhanden, den seit J uhren verwaisten Abschnitt über Zoogeographie dem J ahrbuch wieder einverleiben zu konnen Der Herausgeber hatte im Januar 1893 die Freude, bei personlicher Rucksprncb0 von dem Professor extraordinarius der Tierlmnde an der Universität Leipzig, William Marshall, die bestimmte, bereitwilligst gegebene Zusage zu erhalten, in die Reihe der Mitarbeiter des Jahrbuchs treten und den Bericht für die Jahr! 1889 - 92 bis zum Herbst 1893 abfassen zu wollen. Als ich im August v. J in der höflicbsten Form anfragte, ob ich also sicher auf den Bericht werde rechnen konnen, erhielt ich weder auf dieses Schreiben noch auf drei weitere, die ich bis Anfang 1894 folgen liefs, je irgendeine Antwort von dem genannten Herrn, ge schweige denn eine Zeile eines Berichts. Die Tiergeographie wird daher ohne meine Schuld wieder einige J ahre länger im Jahrbuch unvertreten bleiben. Grotesque Visions focuses on the radical avant-garde interventions of Salomo Friedländer (aka Mynona), Til Brugman, and Hannah Höch as they challenged the questionable practices and evidentiary claims of late-19th- and early-20th-century science. Demonstrating the often excessive measures that pathologists, anthropologists, sexologists, and medical professionals went to present their research in a seemingly unambiguous way, this volume shows how Friedländer/Mynona, Brugman, Höch, and other Berlin-based artists used the artistic grotesque to criticize, satirize, and subvert a variety of forms of supposed scientific objectivity. The volume concludes by examining the exhibition Grotesk!: 130 Jahre Kunst der Frechheit/Comic Grotesque: Wit and Mockery in German Arts, 1870-1940. In contrast to the ahistorical and amorphous concept informing the exhibition, Thomas O. Haakenson reveals a unique deployment of the artistic grotesque that targeted specific established and emerging scientific discourses at the turn of the last fin-de-siècle.

At the end of World War II, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, fearing that retreating Germans would consolidate large numbers of troops in an Alpine stronghold and from there conduct a protracted guerilla war, turned U.S. forces toward the heart of Franconia, ordering them to cut off and destroy German units before they could reach the Alps. Opposing this advance was a conglomeration of German forces headed by SS-Gruppenführer Max Simon, a committed National Socialist who advocated merciless resistance. Under the direction of officers schooled in harsh combat in Russia, the Germans succeeded in bringing the American advance to a grinding halt. Caught in the middle were the people of Franconia. Historians have accorded little mention to this period of violence and terror, but it provides insight into the chaotic nature of life while the Nazi regime was crumbling. Neither German civilians nor foreign refugees acted simply as passive victims caught between two fronts. Throughout the region people pressured local authorities to end the senseless resistance and sought revenge for their tribulations in the "liberation" that followed. Stephen G.
