English summary: Wilhelm Ropke once remarked that one could not understand the history of peoples and cultures if you give no attention to their money. Following this insight, Hendrik Makeler studies the history and importance of money in the German lands of the late Middle Ages, especially as it has to do with constitutional issues. These show, for example, the beginnings of the Hundred Years War and the election of King Charles IV, because in increasingly monetarized politics cash payments were now the preferred means of power. Due to their enormous amounts they significantly influenced the development of monetary theory and the organization of minting in Europe. But even the everyday people dealing with smaller amounts are taken into account by the author, who uses as examples the indulgences of collectors, businessmen, city councils, and students. The work fills a research gap addressing monetary histories of the German late Middle Ages. German text. This book is about two giants of 20th century historiography, Michael Rostovzteff (1870-1952) and Elias Bickerman (1897-1981) whose lives and careers intersected on many occasions but who have rarely been discussed together.
