Penulis, Abdul Halim bin A Karim atau lebih dikenali dengan Ahkarim merupakan pesara kerajaan yang pernah menjawat jawatan sebagai Pengurus Besar Lembaga Pelabuhan Johor. Mendapat pendidikan di Sheffield dalam jurusan Organisation Development, Ahkarim pernah memenangi beberapa anugerah penulisan kreatif. Antaranya, memenangi pertandingan menulis cerpen Cinta anjuran majalah JELITA tahun 2007; pemenang hadiah pertama Cerpenis alam siber 2006 dan hadiah kedua tahun 2007 serta pelbagai anugerah lain anjuran eSastera dan Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka. Menurut dosen dan instruktur senior Pusat Pelatihan Bahasa UGM, Alex H. Rambadeta, hal tersebut dapat membuka khasanah sastra berbahasa asing dari penulis Indonesia dan dapat menjadi bahan acuan sastra berbahasa asing bagi kelas perkuliahan (Bernas, 27 Agustus 2001). Menurut penulisnya sendiri, pembongkaran bahasa justru akan menimbulkan kesan yang mendalam, sebuah dekonstruksi yang malahan akan melahirkan kekayaan bahasa.
Terbitnya The Magician mengundang salut karena merupakan kumpulan cerpen berbahasa Inggris pertama dari penulis Indonesia.
