Eep Saefulloh Fatah: Zaman Heri Latief Sampul majalah Time edisi 25 Desember 2006–1 Desember 2007 itu agak berbeda dengan sampul edisi khusus Person of the Year tahun-tahun sebelumnya. Biasanya pada sampul edisi khusus semacam itu kita akan mendapati gambar seorang atau sekelompok orang yang dipandang Time layak ditokohkan tahun itu. Namun, untuk edisi akhir 2006 itu tak ada sepotong pun wajah di sampul Time. Alih-alih, yang kita sua adalah gambar monitor komputer personal. Khusus pada bagian layar monitornya, cetakan dibuat khusus menyerupai cermin. Walhasil, siapapun yang memegang sampul majalah itu akan melihat pantulan wajahnya sendiri di layar monitor komputer itu. Ya, hanya itulah yang tergambar di sampul Time. Di tengah layar monitor itu tertera secara menyolok: “You.”. Lalu, di bawah gambar komputer itu tertulis, “Yes, You. You Control the Information Age. Welcome to Your World.” Ya. Menurut Time, Andalah yang mengendalikan era informasi ini, menjadi pemilik dari dunia yang Anda kendalikan sendiri itu. Maka, “Anda” adalah “Tokoh Tahun Ini”. Menurut hemat saya, Time telah melakukan pilihan “tokoh” yang sangat tepat. Di tengah perkembangan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi yang begitu pesat, setiap orang memang dipersilakan menyusun sejarah hidupnya sendiri. Di tengah era komputer, internet dan kemudian teknologi mobile yang begitu maju, “Anda” berkesempatan menjadi tokoh yang menentukan cetak biru wajah dunia. Dengan pilihannya itu, Time menegaskan bahwa zaman orang-orang besar yang di-pahlawan-kan telah berakhir. Sebagai gantinya, datanglah zaman orang-orang biasa. Setiap orang mendapat kesempatan menjadi pahlawan, setidaknya untuk jalan hidupnya sendiri. Setiap orang menjadi penentu jalannya sejarah. Peranan kesejarahan itu bahkan diemban oleh setiap orang dengan cara yang sangat sederhana dan mudah: Dengan satu, dua, atau beberapa jentikan jari pada tuts keyboard atau keypad komputer. Sejarah pun berjalan seperti paradoks: Ketika teknologi berkembang begitu canggih, hidup jadi semakin sederhana. Ketika hidup semakin modern dengan melibatkan variabel tak terhingga, ketika itulah setiap orang diberi kesempatan menghela sejarahnya masing-masing. Dulu, berlaku adagium bahwa sejarah ditulis oleh mereka yang menang. Sang Pemenang di zaman dulu adalah seseorang atau sekelompok kecil orang yang memiliki sumber daya cukup untuk merebut kendali atas orang banyak. Sekarang, adagium itu boleh jadi tetap belum tergoyahkan. Sejarah tetap saja ditulis oleh para pemenang. Tetapi, tiap orang mengendalikan sendiri hidupnya lewat akses yang ia miliki terhadap teknologi informasi dan komunikasi yang semakin personal. Orang tak lagi susah payah berebut kendali atas orang lain, tetapi merebut kendali atas dirinya sendiri. Maka, di zaman ini, setiap orang memproklamasikan sendiri kemerdekaannya serta merayakan kebebasan mereka dengan menentukan sendiri jalan hidup mereka. Inilah zaman kita. Di zaman semacam ini, setiap orang memiliki keleluasaan untuk mengekspresikan dirinya tanpa tergantung pihak lain. Dalam keadaan inilah setiap orang berpotensi melakukan dan menjadi apapun yang mereka kehendaki: penyair, perupa, demonstran, penggugat kebijakan, dan seterusnya. Dalam zaman semacam inilah kita bisa memaklumi Heri Latief, puisi-puisinya, dan esei-eseinya. Sesungguhnya Heri Latief bukan “anak zaman ini”. Ia anak zaman dulu. Terdampar di Eropa sejak 1982, ia menjalani masa panjang sebagai warga dunia yang “tak terlalu jelas kewarganegaraannya”. Ketika ia menginjakkan kakinya di Eropa, Steve Jobs, belum membuat iPhone yang fenomenal itu. Internet belum mengharu biru dunia seperti saat ini. Hubungan antarpersonal masih berbasis interaksi nyata, belum maya. Kita belum menjadi penentu sejarah kita sendiri, seperti dirumuskan majalah Time. Tetapi, ketika Heri Latief dengan sigap menyesuaikan diri dengan dua perkembangan dunianya sejak akhir 1990-an: Indonesia–yang selalu disebutnya sebagai Tanah Air–menjalani perubahan cepat dan dramatis, dan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi menggelombang tak terbendung dan memaksa setiap orang hidup dalam dunia nyata sekaligus maya. Hasil penyesuaian diri itu adalah kemampuan ekspresi diri sebagai penentu jalan sejarahnya sendiri, sebagai “pemilik dunia”. Pilihan utama ekspresi diri ini, bagi Heri, adalah apa yang ia sebut sendiri sebagai “puisi berlawan”. Saya tak perlu lagi mengomentari soal puisi-puisi Heri, sebab saya sudah melakukannya dalam pengantar untuk buku antologi puisi Heri Latief, “50% Merdeka”. Selain berpuisi, Heri Latief juga sesekali menulis esei. Sama seperti puisi-puisinya, esei-esei Heri Latief juga mewakili proklamasi kemerdekaan dirinya. Kumpulan esei ini mendokumentasikan esei-esei sebagai ekspresi kemerdekaan diri itu sekaligus menunjukkan sebuah kualitas lain yang dimilikinya, yaitu sebagai “pencatat”. Saya mau sudahi catatan ini di sini. Sebab, ketika seseorang mencatat segenap yang berkembang di sekelilingnya, maka kita bisa berharap padanya untuk menjadi pelawan segenap wujud penyelewengan kekuasaan dan yang melingkupinya. Saya tahu persis, buku ini diterbitkan Heri Latief untuk tujuan perlawanan. Walhasil, Heri tak perlu catatan-catatan saya. Heri Latief hanya perlu terus mencatat sehingga ia terus bisa memelihara perlawanannya. Selamat membaca. Selamat datang di zaman kita sendiri, dan karenanya, di zaman Heri Latief juga.
