The ancient writer Kunda-kunda is regarded as one of the greatest Jaina teachers (acarya) of all time. He is famous for writing essential works called sara, "essence"; e.g., the Pancastikaya-sara, the Samaya-sara, and the Pravacana-sara. His Pravacana-sara, "Essence of the Scripture orDoctrine," summarizes the doctrines of the early Jaina scriptures. Like many Indian philosophical writings, it consists of relatively brief verses, requiring a commentary to be fully understood. This book includes a complete translation of the commentary by Amrtacandra Suri, one of the only suchcommentaries yet translated into English. This is a fundamental work for studies on Jainism.

For 800 years this expert musician class have been "walking libraries," responsible for preserving the region's wisdom and lore. Born in Gambia, Foday Musa Suso is a Mandingo Griot. He mastered the Griot's traditional repertory of 111 songs-many ten or more hours long-by the time he was 18. Suso then took his kora (a 21-string harp-lute), and traveled through Africa, America and Europe, providing audiences with their first taste of Griot music.
