Dank Der vorliegende Band, der dank den langjährigen guten Beziehun gen zwischen' dem Birkhäuser Verlag und dem Museum, vor allem aber dank dessen grosszügiger Einladung zu einem solchen Buch, zustande kam, vereint eine grosse Anzahl von Kulturdokumenten. Das Spektrum reicht von Europa über Afrika, Indien, Indonesien, Australien, Melanesien und Polynesien bis Amerika. Damit wird nicht nur eine grosse kulturelle Vielfalt dokumentiert, sondern zugleich auch die Vielzahl der im Museum für Völkerkunde und Schweizerischen Museum für Volkskunde vertretenen Sammlungs und Forschungsrichtungen der Ethnologie und der Volkskunde. In diesem prächtig ausgestatteten Werk stellen nun Wissenschafter verschiedener Interessengebiete unter dem gemeinsamen Thema wichtige Objekte aus ihrem Bereich der Öffentlichkeit vor. Die Vielseitigkeit, die das Museum heute aufweist, war ursprünglich noch umfassender: Das von Melchior Berri entworfene, 1849 eröff nete klassizistische Museumsgebäude an der Augustinergasse, das ausser den völkerkundlichen und volkskundlichen Sammlungen auch die des Naturhistorischen Museums beherbergt, war als ein Haus der Künste Gesamtmuseum bzw. als ein Haus der Künste und Wissenschaften und Wissenschaften gedacht. Es enthielt damals die historisch-antiquarische und die Kunstsammlung der Stadt Basel, ausserdem die naturhistorische Sammlung, ' die Universitätsbibliothek sowie die chemischen und die physikalischen Institute der Universität. Die frühen ethnographi schen (d. h~ völkerkundlichen) Gegenstände, darunter die berühm ten, von Lukas Vischer zwischen 1828 und 1837 gesammelten präko lumbischen Stücke, waren damals Bestandteil der historisch-anti quarischen Sammlung; sie wurden erst 1893 ausgesondert und einer besonderen Kommission, der der Anatom J. Kollmann, der Arzt L. Rütimeyer und der Geograph R. Hotz angehörten, anvertraut.
