In den USA führte es sogar soweit, dass "Comics durch Gerichtsbeschluss zu Kunst erklärt" wurden. Schon einige Kunstrichtungen hatten schwer zu kämpfen, aber welche musste sich je gerichtlich legitimieren oder bestätigen lassen? Der Comic scheint dahingehend größere Probleme zu haben und ringt noch heute in einigen Ländern um Anerkennung. In Deutschland kann der Comic nur schwer Fuß fassen, in den Nachbarländern Frankreich und Belgien hingegen ist der Umgang mit Comics recht selbstverständlich. Comics existierten schon, bevor moderne Kunst entstanden war. Dennoch konnte sich die moderne Kunst in kürzester Zeit etablieren, während Comics noch heute nur bedingt akzeptiert werden. Kritiker und Lesepublikum sind sich uneinig: Sind Comics oberflächlich oder Kunst? Kritisiert wird beispielsweise, dass der Comic ein Massenmedien ist: Er entstand als Zeitungsstrip, um die Verkaufszahlen der Zeitungen zu erhöhen und hat deshalb zweifelsohne kommerziellen Charakter. Comic wurde als Massenmedium geboren, er kann einfach und häufig reproduziert werden. Die Sprache des Comics ist im allgemeinen einfach und verständlich und natürlich dient er zur Unterhaltung. Aus all diesen Gründen vertreten Kritiker den Standpunkt, dass Massenmedien niemals mit Kunst in Einklang stehen können bzw. dass ein Massenmedium und somit auch Comic keine Kunst sein kann. Als in den 1960er-Jahren allerdings die Pop Art aufkam, konnte dieser Antagonismus aufgehoben werden. Die Pop Art-Künstler beschäftigten sich mit dem Begriff der Massenkultur.
