Kunstgeschichtliches Hintergrundwissen kann zu einem vertieften Verständnis von Kunsttherapie beitragen und die Chancen würdigen, die das Gewähren eines künstlerischen Gestaltungsraums mit sich bringen. In den meisten Handbüchern zur Kunsttherapie spielt die kunstgeschichtliche Entwicklung allerdings nur eine Nebenrolle, so dass auch fachspezifische Literatur aus dem Bereich Kunstgeschichte hinzugezogen wurde. Exemplarisch wird auf van Gogh und die Epoche des Expressionismus eingegangen und später Jospeh Beuys vorgestellt. Dieser prägte den Kunstbegriff so, dass Kunst einen neuen Stellenwert in der Gesellschaft erlangte und der therapeutische Ansatz in der Kunst gefördert wurde. Im letzten Teil wird das Selbstverständnis von Kunsttherapie erörtert. Dabei werden immer wieder auch Bezüge zu den erarbeiteten Erkenntnissen aus der bildenden Kunst hergestellt, um Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede von Kunst und Kunsttherapie deutlich zu machen.
