Physiognomik gilt als eine obsolete esoterische Disziplin, deren Bedeutung sich für die Kunstgeschichte darauf beschränkt, Porträts und Ausdrucksstudien in ihrem historischen Kontext zu verstehen. Sie muss jedoch als ein grundlegendes methodisches Vorbild der kunsthistorischen Forschung verstanden werden. Nicht nur in der Entstehungsphase des Faches um 1800, vor allem im frühen 20. Jahrhundert durchziehen physiognomische Denkfiguren nahezu alle relevanten methodischen Ansätze. Namhafte Kunsthistoriker wie Heinrich Wölfflin, Wilhelm Pinder, Hans Sedlmayr oder Wilhelm Fraenger bezogen sich auf die Methode der Physiognomik, um aus der äußeren Form auf das verborgene Innere des Kunstwerks zu schließen. So wurde der Charakter des Werks, des Künstlers oder auch von Volk, Nation und Rasse bestimmt. Diese ‚physiognomische‘ Fähigkeit der Kunstgeschichte, das Sichtbare zu deuten, machte sie zu einer Leitwissenschaft für viele andere Disziplinen wie die Psychologie und die Rassenforschung, die häufig selbst auf der Physiognomik beruhten. Zugleich dienten diese dazu, der Kunstgeschichte ein anthropologisches Fundament zu verleihen. Physiognomik erweist sich so als eine Bildwissenschaft, die nicht nur für die Entwicklung der kunsthistorischen Methodik von größter Bedeutung war, sondern auch bei den aktuellen Bemühungen um eine Aufwertung des Bildes eine Rolle spielt.

A fresh contribution to the ongoing debate between Kunstwissenschaft (scientific study of art) and Kunstgeschichte (art history), this essay collection explores how German-speaking art historians of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century self-consciously generated a field of study. Prominent North American and European scholars provide new insights into how a mixing of diverse methodologies took place, in order to gain a more subtle and comprehensive understanding of how art history became institutionalized and legitimized in Germany. One common assumption about early art-historical writing in Germany is that it depended upon a simplistic and narrowly-defined formalism. This book helps to correct this stereotype by demonstrating the complexity of discussion surrounding formalist concerns, and by examining how German-speaking art historians borrowed, incorporated, stole, and made analogies with concepts from the sciences in formulating their methods. In focusing on the work of some of the well-known 'fathers' of the discipline - such as Alois Riegl and Heinrich W?lfflin - as well as on lesser-known figures, the essays in this volume provide illuminating, and sometimes surprising, treatments of art history's prior and understudied interactions with a wide range of scientific orientations, from psychology, sociology, and physiognomics to evolutionism and comparative anatomy.

Anhand unveröffentlichter Materialien aus dem Nachlass wird dargestellt, wie Sedlmayr seine Kunstwissenschaft textproduktiv aus Lektüren entwickelt, wie er exzerpiert, zitiert und wie er außerfachliche Denkmodelle textuell adaptiert. Neben der Analyse dieser Textpraktiken und einer fundierten Quellenkritik ermöglichen es die Archivstudien, Sedlmayrs Projekt einer Neulancierung der Kunstwissenschaft zu diskutieren und ausgewählte Publikationen einer fokussierten Re-Lektüre zu unterziehen. Dabei wird exemplarisch gezeigt, welche textuellen Strategien sowie para- und intertextuellen Arrangements im Prozess der Neuformulierung einer Disziplin zum Tragen kommen und wie sich diese unter den unterschiedlichen wissenschaftlich-politischen Konstellationen bis in die 1950er Jahre verändern. This volume explores a basic question in the historiography of art: the extent to which iconology was a homogenous research method in its own immutable right. By contributing to the rejection of the universalizing narrative, these case studies argue that there were many strands of iconology. Methods that differed from the ‘canonised’ approach of Panofsky were proposed by Godefridus Johannes Hoogewerff and Hans Sedlmayr. Researchers affiliated with the Warburg Institute in London also chose to distance themselves from Panofsky’s work. Poland, in turn, was the breeding ground for yet another distinct variety of iconology. In Communist Czechoslovakia there were attempts to develop a ‘Marxist iconology’. This book, written by recognized experts in the field, examines these and other major strands of iconology, telling the tale of iconology’s reception in the countries formerly behind the Iron Curtain. Attitudes there ranged from enthusiastic acceptance in Poland, to critical reception in the Soviet Union, to reinterpretation in Czechoslovakia and the German Democratic Republic, and, finally, to outright rejection in Romania. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual studies, and historiography.
