Now in paperback, the touching, timely story of an Iraqi refugee in Germany. In our era of mass migration, much of it driven by war and its aftermath, A Slap in the Face could not be more timely. It tells the story of Karim, an Iraqi refugee living in Germany whose right to asylum has been revoked in the wake of Saddam Hussein's defeat. But Hussein wasn't the only reason Karim left, and as Abbas Khider unfolds his story, we learn both the secret struggles he faced in his homeland and the battles with prejudice, distrust, poverty, and bureaucracy he has to endure in his attempts to make a new life in Germany. As he erupts in frustration at his caseworker, and finally forces her to listen to his story, we get an account of a contemporary life upended by politics and violence, told with a warmth and humor that, while surprising us, does nothing to lessen the outrages Karim describes.

The use of new media in the service of cultural heritage is a fast growing field, known variously as virtual or digital heritage. New Heritage, under this denomination, broadens the definition of the field to address the complexity of cultural heritage such as the related social, political and economic issues. This book is a collection of 20 key essays, of authors from 11 countries, representing a wide range of professions including architecture, philosophy, history, cultural heritage management, new media, museology and computer science, which examine the application of new media to cultural heritage from a different points of view. Issues surrounding heritage interpretation to the public and the attempts to capture the essence of both tangible (buildings, monuments) and intangible (customs, rituals) cultural heritage are investigated in a series of innovative case studies.

The Origins Of European Identity written by Lambros Couloubaritsis and has been published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with Ethnicity categories.

In addition to the Europe of commerce, technology and science which is in the process of gradual formation there is another quite essential Europe - the citizens' Europe - which is something of a poor relation, even though it is a reality which everyone, starting with the politicians, earnestly wishes to see come about. Such a citizens' Europe should form the bricks and mortar of the European Union. How, then, can we arouse a greater feeling of solidarity and develop that sense of European identity which is so dear to us? To whom can we turn if not to youth and, therefore, to education? The Community Institutions have expressed the desire to form Europe through education and to reinforce the European dimension of education. Nevertheless, a huge void needs to be filled in this area and the Europe of education, still at the embryonic stage, has yet to be constructed. Hence the interest in providing secondary school teachers and students in the twelve countries of the Community with a work aimed primarily at charting a common pool of information on the European identity and encompassing the main thrust of ideas and the essential features of European civilization. In order to reflect current Community policy more faithfully, the book does not set out to replace the curricula taught at the various national schools. Rather, it is intended to supplement them in the form of a uniform and identical «adjunct» to education, with a view to imparting a better knowledge of and greater love for Europe. The choice of both interlocking subject matters designed to illuminate and guide the editing of this work and the multilingual approach, without which the work would lose part of its purely European aim (the work will be published simultaneously in several different languages), is intended to highlight as far as possible the European ideal and the cultural dimension of Europe, starting with the origins of Europe and tracing Europe's past and present, as well as its prospects for the future.

Studies In Bilingual Education written by Daniel Madrid and has been published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Education, Bilingual categories.

This book deals with bilingual education in general, but it pays special attention to bilingual education in monolingual areas. One central aim is to study the effects of bilingual programmes during the final stages of Primary and Secondary Education in contexts where the L2 (English) is not normally used as an instrument of social communication in the students' environment, but instead is used only at school, where some subject areas are undertaken totally or partially in this language. The reader interested in bilingual education will find a valuable source of information on different bilingual programmes in the USA and Spain: what schools do and the contents they teach, their timetable and extracurricular activities; the specific objectives that they aim to achieve and the methodology they use, with special reference to the CLIL approach, the schools and the students' level of success with bilingual education, the most common problems that they have to face in monolingual areas and how to solve them.
