Das Musée des Beaux-Arts de Strasbourg ist wahrscheinlich das einzige Museum Europas, das von der nationalsozialistischen Besatzung, im Sinne rechtmäßiger Eigentumsübertragungen, profitiert hat. Neben der Gründungsphase unter Wilhelm von Bode (1845–1929) müssen die Jahre 1940 bis 1944, in denen das Haus von Kurt Martin (1899–1975) geleitet wurde, als für den Ausbau des Gemäldebestands maßgeblich genannt werden. Die Entwicklung der Sammlung dieses französischen Museums unter der Leitung eines Deutschen während des Zweiten Weltkriegs und in der unmittelbaren Nachkriegszeit bildet den Gegenstand der vorliegenden Publikation. Anhand von bislang unausgewertetem Quellenmaterial werden die kulturpolitischen Ereignisse in der Region Baden/Elsass detailliert nachgezeichnet und bezogen auf Kurt Martin analysiert. Die parallel angelegte, institutionsgeschichtliche wie biographische Untersuchung ermöglicht die Darstellung historischer Fakten vor der Folie der individuellen Zwänge und Handlungsspielräume eines Kunsthistorikers, der seine berufliche Karriere trotz Ablehnung der Partei zwischen 1933 und 1945 fortgesetzt hat. Martins Einkäufe auf dem internationalen Kunstmarkt, seine innerhalb der wechselnden Rechtssysteme realisierten Ausstellungen, die Verbringung der Straßburger Objekte in deutsche Sicherheitsdepots sowie ihre Rückführung ins Elsass nach 1945 liefern als exemplarische Mikrogeschichte wichtige neue Aspekte zum Erschließen des historischen Makrozusammenhangs. Die Arbeit wurde mit dem Johann-Daniel-Schöpflin-Preis 2012 ausgezeichnet.

A compelling exploration of the many issues surrounding the restoration and restitution of Nazi-stolen art at the end of World War II At the end of World War II, the US Office of Military Government for Germany and Bavaria, through its Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives division, was responsible for the repatriation of most of the tens of thousands of artwork looted by the Nazis in the countries they had occupied. With the help of the US Army’s Monuments Men—the name given to a hand-picked group of art historians and museum professionals commissioned for this important duty—massive numbers of objects were retrieved from their wartime hiding places and inventoried for repatriation. Iris Lauterbach’s fascinating history documents the story of the Allies’ Central Collecting Point (CCP), set up in the former Nazi Party headquarters at Königsplatz in Munich, where the confiscated works were transported to be identified and sorted for restitution. This book presents her archival research on the events, people, new facts, and intrigue, with meticulous attention to the official systems, frameworks, and logistical and bureaucratic enterprise of the Munich CCP in the years from 1945 to 1949. A charged biography of a notorious Nazi art plunderer and his career in the postwar art worldBruno Lohse (1911–2007) was one of the most notorious art plunderers in history. Appointed by Hermann Göring to Hitler’s special art looting agency, he went on to supervise the systematic theft and distribution of over 22,000 artworks, largely from French Jews; helped Göring develop an enormous private art collection; and staged twenty private exhibitions of stolen art in Paris’s Jeu de Paume museum during the war. By the 1950s Lohse was officially denazified but back in the art dealing world, offering looted masterpieces to American museums. This edited volume is dedicated to national-socialist archaeology as a Europe-wide phenomenon. It analyses national-socialist attempts to denationalize the archaeologies of European nations by creating a new unifying European archaeology on a racial basis. From the beginning of the nineteenth century, archaeology began to develop into an important force behind processes of nation building. At the same time, structures of transnational academic collaboration contributed strongly to the internal dynamics of the research field, which was primarily organized on a national basis. In those European countries that were confronted with national-socialist occupation and repression between 1939 and 1945, these transnational archaeological networks were to prove crucial for the development of national-socialist archaeological policies. This volume will reveal how national-socialist archaeology was to an extent valued positively in its time as highly innovative, even influencing the archaeology of non-occupied countries. Although in the final instance, it generally failed to displace the national archaeologies in Europe, the volume also analyses the long-term impact of national-socialist rule on the development of European archaeology. How did the attempts to create a unified European archaeology after 1945 continue to influence networks, methods and terminologies, institutional structures, or popular representations of the early past?

Le marché de l’art et les principales institutions, sans mentionner les pouvoirs publics, n’ont pourtant pas facilité après-guerre les recherches permettant de restituer ces biens familiaux. Les salles des ventes, animées par le profit et la spéculation, ont témoigné indifférence, ignorance ou connivence sur un marché où la peinture est devenue, parmi les arts hégéliens, le plus corrompu. Sous l’action conjuguée des associations juives et des États-Unis, la question de la restitution a progressivement fait l’objet d’un consensus, obtenu certes aux forceps, et rendu plus difficile en raison de la valorisation des œuvres d’art. "Early European art was a consuming interest of both Robert Lehman and his father, Philip Lehman, an interest reflected in the remarkable number and quality of drawings they owned from the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries.
