Boleslaw Lesmian (1877–1937), the outstanding Polish poet of the twentieth century, occupies a unique place in world literature. A bilingual poet, he was an inventor of myth-rooted poetic language, a creator of prose genres, a formidable theoretical and literary critic, and a forerunner of present-day Polish poetry and of the theater of the absurd. Rochelle Stone’s study acquaints the English-speaking reader with Lesmian’s life and the magic of his work. Her translations of the quoted poems—rendered into English for the first time—reveal his innovative attitude toward language, the concreteness of his imagery, and his fantasticism. Her critical analysis of his poetics in the literary, historical, and philosophical context of his time shows him to be the most consistent Symbolist in Poland, and one whose esthetics correspond much more closely to those of the second generation of Russian Symbolists than to those of his own contemporary Polish scene. The author’s examination of the three evolutionary stages of Lesmian’s mythogenic poetry against the background of his philosophical, critical, and theoretical works demonstrates the unique fact of the convergence between his theory and poetry. She shows that the irrational and haphazard elements in Lesmian’s poetry were in fact intentionally, rationally, and consistently orchestrated to reflect the poet’s philosophical, esthetic, and social concepts about humanity’s predicament in an illusory world. Rochelle Stone’s wide-ranging study offers a vivid illumination of a poet who has had an undeniable impact on the exuberantly developing poetry of the post-1956 years. Oddźwięki. Tytuł pierwszego i najbardziej znanego polskiego przekładu słynnego sonetu Correspondances Charles’a Baudelair’a miał początkowo brzmieć inaczej. Antoni Lange sięgnął najpierw po słowo ”korrespondencje”, które zdawało się najbliższe oryginału, przynajmniej brzmieniowo. Ciekawe, że sto lat później, u progu lat dziewięćdziesiątych XX wieku, Maria Leśniewska, autorka jednego z ostatnich tłumaczeń wiersza, zrezygnowała w ogóle z szukania ekwiwalentów zbyt bogatego w znaczenie les Correspondances i pozostawiła je w oryginale. Oboje oni mieli pewne racje, o czym świadczy tożsamość terminów la correspondance de arts i „korespondencja sztuk”, inaczej jednak niż w języku francuskim – w polskim „korespondencje” w liczbie mnogiej nie grzeszą urodą. Tak też zapewne sądził Zenon Przesmycki, który – rzecz to dotąd nieujawniona – redagował pierwszy u nas wybór z Kwiatów zła, zatytułowany – co już wiadomo dość szeroko, jako że należał do zwiastunów tryumfu Młodej Polski – Kwiaty grzechu i wydany w 1894 roku. Redaktor przekreślił pomysł Langego i podsunął inne rozwiązanie: Podobieństwa. Odbicia. Nie warto byłoby we wstępie do zbioru różnorodnych artykułów na temat wieku XIX wobec sztuk męczyć czytelnika szczegółami historii przekładów sonetu Correspondance, którą przecież – po zatoczeniu przez nią koła – można uznać za definitywnie zamkniętą i nieciekawą, gdyby nie intrygująca pojemność znaczeniowa zmian, dokonywanych przez kolejnych tłumaczy. Za każdą z nich kryje się jakaś ważna myśl, jakiś cenny aspekt zagadnienia, rozpatrywanego także przez autorów tej książki. Nie przypadkiem sonet Baudelaire’a zajmuje centralne miejsce w rozważaniach nad wzajemnymi relacjami sztuk czy – jak to wyraził ten poeta eseista – „koincydencją sztuk”. Odcienie. Wobec niemalże kosmicznej przepastności zagadnienia korespondencji sztuk próby jego zgłębienia wywołują częstokroć wrażenie zbytniego zuchwalstwa, maksymalizmu, który prowadzi na manowce wszystkoizmu. Jako przestrogę dla śmiałków odczytać można rozważanie Juliana Bakuły o polypragmosyne, które łączy się ze swego rodzaju imperializmem poznawczym. „Książka […] jest znakomitym uzupełnieniem studiów nad dziewiętnastowiecznością i inspiracją dla: kulturoznawców, muzykologów, literaturoznawców, historyków i teoretyków literatury, historyków, filozofów sztuki i antropologów, historyków sztuki, muzealników, a nawet… angelologów” (B. Obsulewicz-Niewińska).
